NORFOLK, Va. -- The Old Dominion men's and women's swimming squads swept George Washington on Saturday at the J.C. "Scrap" Chandler Pool on Saturday.
The ODU men improved to 4-0 this season and have won nine straight meets dating back to last season with its 142-106 win. The Monarchs picked up nine first place finishes led by Mikael Ramkvist (Bjarred, Sweden) with top times in the 100 and 200 back.
Ramkvist, a senior tri-captain, swam to a first place time of 52.69 in the 100 back and picked up his second event win of the afternoon with a time of 1:57.56 in the 200 back.
Also picking up wins for the Monarchs were freshman Sidni Hoxha (Tirane, Albania) in the 50 free (21.41), three-time CAA Swimmer of the Week Arni Arnason (Mosfellsbaer, Iceland) in the 100 free (46.93), and senior Kris Hagg (Skovde, Sweden) in 200 free (1:43.54). Freshman Jason Haigh (Williamsburg, Va.) won the 100 breast by hitting the wall in a time of 1:00.42, while classmate Daniel Camozzo (Herndon, Va.) took home a first place finish in the 200 fly with a time of 1:58.22.
In relay action, the 200 medley squad of freshman Andrew Crockett (Toano, Va.), freshman Ryan Telep (Chandler, Ariz.), sophomore Brian Fischetti (Richmond, Va.), and Hagg added to the win total with a top time of 1:38.69.
The ODU women meanwhile upped their overall mark to 5-3 on the season with a 139-115 victory over the Colonials. The Lady Monarchs had eight first place finishes in the win led by two-time CAA backstroke champion April Barrientos (Va. Beach, Va.).
Barrientos, a senior co-captain, won both the 100 and 200 back for the Lady Monarchs. She was the only competitor to finish the 100 back in under a minute clocking in at 57.97. Barrientos later won the 200 back with a time of 2:07.94.Freshmen Abby Vance (Raleigh, N.C.) and Malin Ekstrand (Halmstad, Sweden) led the Lady Monarchs in a pair of freestyle events. Vance won the 1000 free (10:32.72), while Ekstrand captured the top time in the 100 free (52.44).
Also earning first place finishes for the Lady Monarchs were junior Erla Haraldsdottir (Njardvik, Iceland) in the 100 breast (1:04.17), senior co-captian Lauren Fiskus (Yorktown, Va.) in the 200 breast (2:24.88), and freshman Laura Cempel (Mokena, Ill.) in the 200 fly (2:09.27).
The 200 medley relay team of Barrientos, freshman Mary Rose Palermo (Marietta, Ga.), Haraldsdottir, and freshman Elizabeth Ward (Va. Beach, Va.) posted a first place finish with a time of 1:51.47.
Next up for the Monarchs and Lady Monarchs is the annual training trip taking place this year down in Fort Myers, Florida at the end of December.
