Tomchick Pitches ODU To A Doubleheader Split With Georgia State

NORFOLK, VA--ODU sophomore righthander Ben Tomchick (Virginia Beach, Va.) pitched eight innings,scattering five hits with a career high nine strikeouts as the Monarchs win game two, 6-1. Georgia State won the opener, 2-1. ODU is 12-14/1-1), GSU is 13-9/1-1).

In the opener, David Buchanan fanned 12 with no walks and outdueled ODU's Kyle Hald(Springfield, VA.), theCAA's strikeout leader in the 2-1 decision. Hald fanned six and allowed only three hits with four walks in 7.2 innings of work. Hald's earned run average is now at 2.56.

The Panthers scored both runs in the fourth inning. Brett Maxwell and Bradley Logan walked thenscored on Ryan Fleming's single. ODU threatened in the ninth when senior thirdbaseman JakeMcAloose (Virginia Beach, Va.) led off with his third homer of the season. Nathan Hartman (Orlando, Fl.) singled, but reliever Justin Malone got a double play ball to end the game.

In game two, the Monarchs scored four runs in the sixth to break a 1-1 tie. With the bases loaded,Kenny Stoneback (Colonial Heights, VA.) walked to bring home Chris Buss. Cameron Scott (Culpeper, Va.) was hit with a pitch to bring home Joe Velleggia (Monkton, MD.). Donnie Corsner (Virginia Beach, Va.) walked to bring home Josh Wright (Bridgewater, VA.) and Jake McAloose's sacrifice fly plated Stoneback to make it 5-1.Stoneback had three hits in game one and a hit with two walks in game two.

Nathan Hartman doubled home McAloose in the eighth and in the first inning Edgar HernandezDoubled home McAloose. Hartman now has 29 RBI which ranks seventh in the CAA.

Shortstop Chris Buss (Rosemount, MN.) led ODU in game two with two hits, while McAloose scored twice. Senior pitcher Austin Wright (Virginia Beach, Va.) pitched the ninth for ODU.

Monarch pitching held the Panthers to eight hits on the day. Georgia State came into the doubleheaderleading the nation in hitting at .395.

Georgia State was led by Carl Moniz who singled home Brandon Williams in the fifth inning.The third game of the series is Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Bud Metheny Baseball Complex.
