NORFOLK, Va. -- The Old Dominion baseball Monarchs dropped both games of a doubleheader with the Bucknell Bison on Saturday. The Monarchs fell 13-7 in the opener and then dropped a 13-4 decision in game number two to fall to 4-3 overall on the year.
In the first game, Bucknell took a 5-0 lead in the top of the third, but just an inning later, the Monarchs used four hits and capitalized on a Bison error to tie the game at five all. Cameron Scott (Culpeper, Va.) started the ODU rally with a single to center and Austin ride used a single through the left side to send another two runs home for the Monarchs. The bottom of the fourth continued with Edgar Hernandez (Luquillo, PR) reaching home on a error by Bucknell and Brandon Shelton (Chesapeake, Va.) followed up with an RBI single to left center.
ODU briefly took the lead in the fifth, going ahead 6-5. John Malbon (Va. Beach, Va.) led off the inning with a double to center and four batters later rounded by the bases thanks to a single to center by Hernandez.
The Monarch advantage was brief as with the following at-bat the Bison knocked in three more runs and added another five in the top of the ninth.
ODU managed just one more run in the game as Nathan Hartman (Orlando, Fla.) scored in the eighth off a single to short by Hernandez.
Righthander Ben Tomchick (Va. Beach, Va.) took the loss for the Monarchs in game one. Tomchick pitched 5.1 innings allowing eight hits, six earned runs, while striking out six. At the plate, Austin Wright (Va. Beach, Va.) finished 2-of-5 with a pair of RBIs, while Malbon went 2-of-3 with two runs scored.
Bucknell ran out to an early 1-0 lead to open game number two and never looked back. The Bison's Bob Donato singled through the right side scoring Ben Yoder and the vistors held on to the lead for the rest of the night.
The Bison added five more runs in the top of the second.
Old Dominion scored three runs in the bottom of the inning with a two RBI single by Austin McGowan (Midlothian, Va.) to right and Shelton using a sac fly to right for score Kenny Stoneback (Colonial Heights, Va.).
Bucknell went on to add two runs in the third, three in the fourth, and another two in the sixth.
Old Dominion scored its fourth and final run of the night in the sixth. Stoneback helped Joe Velleggia (Monkton, Md.) round the bases on a sac fly to right with the bases loaded.
Righty C.J. Huyett (Lawrenceville, Pa.) picked up the loss for the Monarchs in the second game. Huyett pitched 2.2 innings of play with eight hits, seven earned runs, and four Bucknell batters struck out. Both McGowan and Vellegia finished the night at 2-for-4 from the plate. McGowan had a pair of RBIs, while Vellegia captured a pair of runs for ODU.
The Monarchs close out the series with Bucknell tomorrow at Bud Metheny Stadium. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
