FAIRFAX, Va. -- The third day of competition at the 2010 CAA Swimming and Diving Championship saw junior April Barrientos (Va. Beach, Va.) claim her second straight title in the 100 back and Icelanders Erla Haraldsdottir (Njardvik, Iceland) and Arni Arnason (Msfellsbaer, Iceland) in the 100 breast and the women's 200 medley relay team swim to NCAA "B" cut times.
The ODU men currently sit in fourth place overall with defending champion UNC-Wilmington still holding on to first place with 467. George Mason sits second with 412, followed Delaware in third with 348.5. The Monarchs are in fourth with 340 points followed by William & Mary in fifth (295.5), Drexel in sixth (243), and Towson in seventh (144).
The ODU women are currently seventh overall. Towson holds on to the top spot with 513 points followed by second place UNC-Wilmington with 435.5 points and James Madison in third with 401 points. George Mason is fourth (296), followed by William & Mary in fifth (287.5), Delaware in sixth (208.5), the Lady Monarchs in seventh (197.5), Northeastern in eighth (129), and Drexel in ninth (80).
Finals action kicked off on Friday evening with the 200 medley relay. The ODU women with the team of junior April Barrientos (Va. Beach, Va.), sophomore Erla Haraldsdottir, senior Agata Nowak (Gorzow, Poland), and sophomore Emma Forbes (Peekskill, N.Y.) posted not only a NCAA "B" cut time by hitting the wall in a time of 1:42.19, but also collected the second fastest time in the Lady Monarch record books in their second place finish. The ODU men meanwhile placed fourth in the event with junior Mikael Ramkvist (Bjarred, Sweden), sophomore Arni Arnason, senior Johan Lundberg (Fjaras, Sweden), and junior Steven Loccisano (Fredericksburg, Va.) recording a time of 1:31.68.
In the men's 400 IM,the Monarchs had three swimmers in the finals, including a pair placing their names among the top 10 all-time times in the event. Senior Kevin Latimer (Newport News, Va.) was the runner-up taking second place in a time of 3:57.59. Latimer not only posted his personal best time, but also the second fatest time in ODU history. Freshman Jason Brame (Lynchburg, Va.) was also in the 400 IM finals taking fourth place with a time of 4:01.85, the seventh best time in the Monarch record books. Also in the finals was sophomore Bryan Russell (Prince George, Va.) with a fifth place time of 4:01.93.
The 100 fly had senior Agata Nowak take fourth place with collecting a time of 55.33 for the women, while on the men's side, freshman Brian Fischetti (Richmond, Va.) reached the consolation finals placing 16th with a time of 51.55, narrowly missing out on the top 10 times list.
Madeline Stiles (Fairfax, Va.) and Kelli North (Newport News, Va.) swam in the consolation finals of the 200 free. Stiles swam the event in a time of 1:53.09 to place 14th, while North took 16th with her time of 1:54.91. Stiles' time was the sixth fastest time in the ODU record books. For the men, three Monarchs placed in the top 16 of the 200 free with senior Chad Gangwer (Va. Beach, Va.) making the event finals. Gangwer took fourth place with a time of 1:39.76. In the consolations, Steven Loccisano took 12th (1:42.15) and Kris Hagg (Skovde, Sweden) swam to 16th place (1:45.24).
Erla Haraldsdottir, who yesterday captured a NCAA "B" cut time and ODU record in the 200 IM, posted another NCAA "B" cut time and ODU record on Friday. Haraldsdottir claimed second place in the 100 breast swimming to a "B" cut time of and ODU record of 1:01.32. Lauren Fiskus (Yorktown, Va.) swam in the consolations taking 12th with a time of 1:04.67 to put her name right under Haraldsdottir in the record books for the second fastest 100 breast time in Lady Monarch history.
Haraldsdottir wasn't the only ODU swimmer to post a NCAA "B" cut in the 100 breast. Fellow Icelander Arni Arnason also placed second in the event with a "B" cut time of 54.10. Two other Monarchs also swam in the 100 breast finals, with two more Monarchs in the consolations. Josh Kinas (Reston, Va.) captured sixth place (56.55) for the third fastest time in the record books, while Johan Lundberg claimed seventh place (57.23). Kristian Ramkvist (Bjarred, Sweden) placed 10th (57.47) to tie for seventh on the all-time list, while Ryan Peart (Fort Washington, Pa.) rounded out the Monarch finishers with a 13th place performance (57.81) for the 10th best time in the Monarch logs.
Junior April Barrientos (Va. Beach, Va.) went on to capture her second straight 100 back title. In the prelims, Barrientos set a new CAA and ODU record with a time of 54.75. In the finals, she took the top spot with a time of 54.96 and a NCAA "B" cut time.
On the men's side, Kristian Ramkvist reached the finals taking eight place in a time of 50.77 and the third fastest time in the Monarch records.
Women's 1 meter diving saw junior Kelsey Thompson (Chesapeake, Va.) make the top 16 scoring a 199.80.
In the final event of the day, the 800 free relay, saw both the ODU women and men place sixth. The Lady Monarch squad of freshman Carrie Goodman (Glen Allen, Va.), sophomore Maddie Stiles, senior Kelli North, and freshman Danielle Naylor (Swinton, England) finished in a time of 7:32.47, the second fastest time in Lady Monarch history. The Monarch team of junior Steven Loccisano, junior Chad Gangwer, senior Kevin Latimer, and junior Josh Kinas finished the event in a time of 6:54.72.
Saturday is the final day of competition at the 2010 CAA Swimming and Diving Championship. On the schedule is the 1650 free, 200 back, 100 free, 200 breast, 200 fly, 400 free relay, and men's 3 meter diving. For live results click here.
