NORFOLK, Va. -- The Old Dominion Monarchs improved to 9-2 this season with a pair of wins on Sunday, over Richmond and Christopher Newport University. ODU won 11 of the 12 singles matches and swept the doubles point from the Captains.
ODU opened the day with a 5-1 win over Richmond, led by junior Tobias Fanselow (Essen, Germany). The two teams only played in singles action, and Fanselow posted a straight set victory against the Spiders No. 1, Sebastien Fauchet, 6-2, 6-2.
After dropping the first set, Benjamin Chomette came back to drop William Minter in a 2-6, 6-2, 6-0 final at No. 2 singles. ODU would lose at No. 3, but answered with wins at No. 4, 5 and 6 as Krzysztof Muzalewski, Albert Ochagavia and Fahoum Fahoum won, respectively.
ODU also dropped Christopher Newport in a match later in the day in a 7-0 final. Fanselow defeated nationally ranked Eric Shulman, 6-2, 6-2. The Monarchs would sweep every match against the Captains. Fanselow and Chomette paired for the win at No. 1 doubles, 8-4, and freshman Alfredo Rodriguez earned a win at No. 6 singles while also pairing with Fahoum for the win at No. 3 doubles.
Old Dominion returns to the court next weekend against Temple and opens CAA action with a home match against William & Mary.
