NORFOLK, Va. -- It was a spilt for the Old Dominion swimming and diving teams in their final home meet of the 2009-2010 season on Saturday with the East Carolina Pirates.
The ODU men picked up a 171-117 victory over the Pirates with 13 victories led by Kristian Ramkvist (Bjarred, Sweden) with wins in the 100 and 200 Breast and 200 IM. The win over East Carolina upped the Monarchs overall record to 4-1 on the year.
The ODU women, meanwhile, fell to the Pirates by a score of 130-170 dropping their overall mark to 3-4 on the season. The Lady Monarchs earned nine victories with junior April Barrientos (Va. Beach, Va.) bringing home wins in the 100 and 200 back and newcomer Danielle Naylor picking up wins in the 500 and 1000 free.
On the men's side, Ramkvist registered his first event win of the afternoon in the 100 breast swimming to a first place time of 58.29. Later, Ramkvist led a one-two-three finish for the Monarchs in the 200 breast with a time of 2:07.81. Following Ramkvist were junior Josh Kinas (Reston, Va.) in second (2:11.23) and senior Johan Lundberg (Fjaras, Sweden) in third (2:11.48). Ramkvist finished up the meet with a win in the 200 IM posting a time of 1:54.46 helping the Monarchs to a one-two-three-four placement. Sophomore Arni Arnason finished behind Ramkvist in second (1:55.43), Kevin Latimer in third (1:58.64), and sophomore Brian Russell (Prince George, Va.) in fourth (2:00.49).
Mikael Ramkvist (Bjarred, Sweden) swam to wins in the 100 and 200 back. In the 100 back, the Swedish swimmer captured a time of 52.09, while posting a top time of 1:54.17 in the 200 back.
Also earning a victory was freshman Jason Brame (Lynchburg, Va.) led the way in the 1000 free with a top time of 9:44.39 in the event.
In a shorter distances, Arni Arnason (Msfellsbaer, Iceland) was the top finisher in the 50 and 100 free. In the 50 free, Arnason logged a time of 21.08, followed by Ryan Peart (Fort Washington, Pa.) in second in a time of 21.64. Arnason later recorded a finishing time of 46.57 in the 100 free with senior Chad Gangwer (Va. Beach, Va.) taking second in a time of 47.42.
Senior Kevin Latimer (Newport News, Va.) added to the Monarch victory tally with his 200 fly win. Latimer hit the wall in a time of 1:53.79.
In the relays, both the 200 medley and 400 free relay teams both swam to first place finishes. The 200 medley squad of Mikael Ramkvist, Arnason, Lundberg, and Gangwer hit the wall in a time of 1:34.57. The 400 free relay team of Mikael Ramkvist, Steven Loccisano, Ryan Peart, and Gangwer logged a first place finish of 2:09.98.
In diving action, David Skorupa (Richmond, Va.) dove his way to a first place score of 291.83, a season-high for the senior Monarch.
On the women's side, Naylor earned her first win with the 1000 free. The Lady Monarch newcomer hit the wall in a time of 10:24.72. Later in the meet, Naylor posted a victory in the 500 free in a time of 5:03.58, nearly six seconds faster than the second place finisher from ECU.
Barrientos' first victory of the day came in the 100 back. The ODU record holder in the event and two-time CAA champion captured a time of 57.72 for the top time. Towards the end of the meet, Barrientos recorded win number two with a time of 2:06.32 in the 200 back.
Sophomore Erla Haraldsdottir (Njardvik, Iceland) earned a win in the 100 breast. The ODU record holder in the event posted a first place time of 1:05.06.
Freshman Jessica Hubert (Newport News, Va.) gave the Lady Monarchs another victore in the 200 fly. The Lady Monarchs freshman registered a time of 2:05.97.
Junior Lauren Fiskus (Yorktown, Va.) followed with a victory in the 200 breast, swimming her way to a top time of 2:22.26.
Senior Agata Nowak (Gorzow, Poland) picked up win in the 100 fly. The ODU record holder captured a first place time of 57.48, followed by teammate Hubert in second.
In the relays, the 200 medley relay squad of Barrientos, Haraldsdottir, Nowkak, and senior Elizaveta Moiseeva (Moscow, Russia) recorded a first place victory with a time of 1:46.18.
The Old Dominion men's and women's swimming and diving teams return to the water in a quad meet with Army, American, and CAA rival George Mason in the Patriot's pool next weekend.
MONARCH MOMENT:
The Old Dominion swim team will hold a memorial service at the J.C. "Scrap" Chandler Pool at the new Student Recreation Building this Sunday from 3 - 6 p.m. in honor of Matt Livsey ('79), who suddenly passed away on Thursday from a heart attack.
Livsey graduated from Old Dominion in 1979 and has helped run swim meets for the Monarchs and Lady Monarchs over the last several years. He was known throughout the swimming community as the ultimate volunteer and the guy who knew everything about running a swim meet.
Livsey is survived by his wife, Sandy ('81), who was also a member of the ODU swim team, and their three children - Cammy, Ashton, and David.
