NORFOLK, Va. - The Old Dominion sailing team competed for the Stu Nelson and Sherman Hoyt Trophies this past weekend. The Lady Monarchs had a solid sixth place finish at the Stu Nelson Trophy, hosted by Connecticut College, while the coed team finished in 14th at the Sherman Hoyt Intersectional Regatta, held in Providence, R.I.
The Lady Monarchs battled a 17-team field for the Stu Nelson Trophy on the Thames River in New London, Conn. Races were sailed in 10 knots of south-southeast breeze on Saturday morning. The breeze increased throughout the day, building to 15 knots in the afternoon. Sunday proved to be the opposite with 12-15 knots of northwesterly breeze in the morning that died throughout the day, ending up around five knots by the afternoon.
The ODU squad, comprised of Stephanie Roble, Ashley Pellerito, Ashley Brusso, Morgan Wilson and Arianna Baker, had 204 points. The Lady Monarchs won a total of three races and had 11 top-five finishes. Dartmouth won the regatta with 167 points.
ODU sailors had to battle strong southerly winds on Saturday and shifty northerly winds on Sunday at the Sherman Hoyt Trophy Intersectional Regatta. Top-ranked Yale won the event with 155 points and the Monarchs accumulated 294 points.
The trio of Michael Komar, Katrina Williams and Shannon Wilkins ended the weekend sixth in the B Division. After a shaky opening two races, ODU finished in the top-10 in 11 of the final 12 races, including a win and six top-five's. Zack Kelchner and Dillon Paiva finished 16th in the A Division with three top-10 finishes.
