Joe Makovec

Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach

Joe Makovec is in his fifth year at Old Dominion University where he serves as the assistant strength and conditioning coach working primarily with the Monarch football program.

Makovec spent three years as the assistant strength and conditioning coach at Hofstra University before joining the Old Dominion staff. There he was solely responsible for designing and implementing the flexibility, nutritional, speed, strength and conditioning protocols for 15 varsity programs, while also assisting with football and men's and women's lacrosse. He also performed periodic body composition and nutritional assessments for student-athletes, as well as aiding in implementing rehabilitation programs for injured student-athletes in conjunction with Hofstra's sports medicine team.

Prior to Hofstra, Makovec was the strength and conditioning coach for the Hamburg Sea Devils of NFL Europe during the 2005 season. Before that he was an intern with the National Football League's Indianapolis Colts. He served as an intern from March of 2002 until March of 2003, and was the first strength and conditioning intern to be invited to stay on for a full season by the Colts. He has also had high school football coaching experience at his alma mater, Riverdale High School, where he handled strength and conditioning as well as positional coaching - working with linebackers and running backs during the 2004 and 2005 seasons.

Makovec is a 2003 graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point with degree in health promotion and wellness. While at Stevens Point, Makovec was a linebacker on the football team and was a part of three conference championship winning teams in the WIAC, as well as two NCAA Division III playoff appearances.

He is certified by the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) as a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS).
