NORFOLK, Va. -- Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Year, Janelle Engle (Mt. Joy, Pa.), and Colonial Athletic Association Tournament Most Outstanding Player, Dana Sensenig (Denver, Pa.) were named Dartfish/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) it was announced last week. Engle, a senior defender, earned first team honors, while Sensenig, a junior midfielder, was named to the second team.
Engle earned her first All-America honor after guiding the team with a team-high 20 goals to go along with 10 assists for 50 points. A two-time First Team All-South Region honoree, Engle ranked among CAA players in the following categories: first in shots, first in shots per game, second in points, third in points per game, first in goals, second in goals per game, sixth in assists, and eighth in assists per game. Defensively she helped Old Dominion to six shutouts (Virgnia, Miami-Ohio, Drexel, Va. Commonwealth, Hofstra, & UNC). Her most memorable offensive moment came when she collected a career-high eight points from four goals in a 5-0 victory over Va. Commonwealth. Engle tallied game-winners against Penn State, Va. Commonwealth, and Hofstra and served as the primary striker for the penalty corner unit which saw 228 opportunities.
Sensenig, who earned third team All-America honors last year, moved up to the second team this season after capturing a team-best 53 points stemming from 19 goals and 15 assists. A two-time All-South region pick, and a First Team All-CAA selection, Sensenig ranked among CAA players in the following categories: First in points, second in points per game, second in goals, third in goals per game, second in assists, second in assists per game, and first in game-winning goals. She led the Lady Monarchs with five-game winners (Richmond, Drexel, James Madison, Northeastern, & William & Mary) and collected a season-high five points in wins over Miami-Ohio, Towson, and North Carolina. Sensenig also registered multiple scoring efforts in wins against Virginia and Delaware. She was also a member of the penalty corner unit as the primary inserter, which saw 228 opportunities.
The 2005 version of the Old Dominion women's field hockey team concluded the year with a 19-6 overall mark and made its 16th Final Four appearance. The Lady Monarchs were ranked third in the final STX/NFHCA coaches' poll and also collected their 13th CAA title. Six Lady Monarchs were named to the all-region team earlier in November. Old Dominion is the only field hockey team to appear in all 25 NCAA Tournaments since its inception in 1981 and have captured a NCAA record nine national championships.
