ODU Honors Student Athletes At Honors Banquet

Nov. 3, 2005

NORFOLK, Va. - Old Dominion senior back Janelle Engle (Mt. Joy, Pa.), who has led the Lady Monarchs to a No. 4 national ranking and a perfect 8-0 record in the Colonial Athletic Association regular season, was named the CAA Field Hockey Player of the Year in a vote by the league's head coaches. The conference presented its year-end awards and all-conference teams Thursday night in Norfolk to kick off the 2005 CAA Field Hockey Championship weekend.

Also receiving top field hockey honors from the CAA were William & Mary senior back Anna Davis (Richmond, Va./James River) as the league's Defensive Player of the Year, and Old Dominion freshman midfielder Denise Admiraal (Heiloo, Holland/Jac P. Thijsse) as the Rookie of the Year. Old Dominion's Beth Anders was tabbed as the Coach of the Year.

Engle had an outstanding season offensively, tying for the CAA lead with 17 goals. A member of the 2004 All-CAA first team and the 2003 All-CAA second team, Engle also dished out eight assists for a total of 42 points on the season, which was good for third place in the conference. The senior had a career game on Oct. 7 when she found the back of the cage four times in a 5-0 defeat of VCU. Engle's honor marks the 11th time that a Lady Monarch has received Player of the Year recognition.

Davis helped captain the Tribe while anchoring a William & Mary defense that led the CAA in defensive saves. The senior tallied a league-leading 10 defensive saves this year, which is fourth-most in a season in school history, and has 23 for her career, which puts her second on the Tribe's all-time list. Like Engle, she was also a member of the 2004 All-CAA first team and the 2003 All-CAA second team.

Admiraal wasted no time making her mark on the CAA in her freshman season, placing fourth in the league in points with 37 and tying for third in goals with 16. The midfielder from Holland was also tops in the conference in shot percentage out of all players that attempted 14 or more shots. She converted 16 of her 42 attempts for a .381 success rate. Admiraal received CAA Rookie of the Week Honors twice this season.

Anders collects her eighth CAA Coach of the Year award following Old Dominion's 15-5 overall record and regular season first-place finish. The 15 wins are the Lady Monarchs' highest total since the 2002 season when they won 21 games, and the 8-0 conference record marks the 11th time that ODU has gone undefeated in league play. Old Dominion recently jumped three spots to the No. 4 ranking in the latest STX/NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll. Anders is in her 23rd season at the helm of the Lady Monarchs' field hockey squad, and has increased her all-time Division I-leading career victories total to 457.

ODU and Hofstra led all schools with three players selected to the All-CAA first team. Joining Engle from ODU were junior midfielder Dana Sensenig and junior back Caroline Nichols, while the Pride had junior midfielder Doni-Melissa Jantzen, sophomore forward Pemba Ramdoo and junior goalkeeper Jessica Cowperthwait on the squad. CAA newcomer Northeastern was represented by senior back Lauren Edelmeier and junior forward Whitney Shean. Rounding out the first team along with W&M's Davis were James Madison junior midfielder/back Baillie Versfeld and Delaware sophomore back Molly Burke.
