NORFOLK, Va. - Old Dominion’s open sailing team finished in ninth place at the War Memorial Regatta hosted by Navy in Annapolis, Maryland. The women’s sailing team earned a fifth-place finish at the MAISA Fall Women’s Championship hosted by Hobart & William Smith in Ithaca, New York as the Monarchs wrapped up a weekend of sailing.

"We wrapped up our fall double-handed schedule with the War Memorial at Navy, and the MAISA Women’s Fall Dinghy Championship at Hobart & William Smith,” said ODU Head Coach Mitch Brindley. “With only five of the 14 scheduled races completed due to winds that were often below the four-knot minimum, it was a frustrating weekend. Despite struggling in the light air conditions, we showed overall improvement over last year’s performance at the same event."

The women’s sailing team had 109 points, five more points than Hobart and William Smith (104) and Fordham (104) who placed ahead of the Monarchs in third and fourth, respectively. The two had to go to a head-to-head tiebreaker where H&W came out on top. Georgetown (53) captured first place followed by Columbia (76) in second. ODU finished ahead of Navy (120) in sixth place followed by Penn (129) in seventh. Kings Point (148), St. Mary’s (Md.) (159), Cornell (166), SUNY Maritime (175), and Princeton (217) rounded out places eight through 12, respectively.

Gianna Dewey and Morgan Auth sailed in the A Division at the MAISA Fall Women’s Championship and finished with 53 points in fifth place. Arabella Duer and Petra Humphrey competed in the B Division and finished in fourth place with 56 points.

“The women’s squad did a nice job of overcoming some Saturday struggles to really bounce back and execute well on Sunday,” said ODU Associate Head Coach Tyler Colvin. "This was the first time at Hobart for several of the players and they showed great adaptability in a new environment and changing conditions.”

The open sailing team went to a head-to-head tiebreaker against Kings Point and came up short to finish in ninth with 85 points. Kings Point (85) placed eighth while Georgetown (31) earned first place. Navy (40), H&W (44), and Penn (50) placed second through fourth, respectively. Fordham (58) and St. Mary’s (Md.) (62) placed fifth and sixth while Queen’s finished two points behind the Monarchs with 87 for 10th. SUNY Maritime (114), Virginia Tech (115), Webb Institute (129), RIT (135), Washington College (Md.) (140), Christopher Newport (141), and Penn State (149) placed 11-17th, respectively.

Pierce Brindley and Madison Bivins competed in Division A for Old Dominion and ended the regatta with 52 points. Marina Conde and Helena Allocco finished in sixth place in Division B with 33 points.

"This week we turn our full focus to preparing Esther Ireland for the College Sailing Singlehanded National Championship which is next week in Rye, New York,” said Brindley.
