NORFOLK, Va. - Old Dominion sailing competed in three events this weekend. ODU finished in sixth and ninth at the Van Duyne Trophy, 10th at the Women’s ACC Championship Round One, and 11th at the Charleston Fall Regatta.
“It was a busy weekend across the board for the sailing team in regattas from Charleston to Dartmouth,” said ODU Head Coach Mitch Brindley. “At the College of Charleston Fall, it was a highlight for Esther [Ireland] and Maddie [Bivins] to finish the regatta strong with a 2-1 set in A division. In Annapolis at the conference single-handed championship, Antonio [Barabino] and Pierce [Brindley] had some very respectable finishes in a tough fleet and conditions. It was a disappointing overall result, but I am proud of the way they both approached the regatta and worked through setbacks. The women’s regatta at Dartmouth was a great opportunity to check in with a very competitive field of out-of-conference teams. Across the board, we have work to do with our race-to-race consistency.”
ODU finished in sixth and ninth at the Van Duyne Trophy while host Navy took home first place. The Midshipmen’s second boat placed fifth while Georgetown fielded three boats that finished second, fourth, and 11th. St. Mary’s (Md.) sailed two boats which placed third and 12th. Fordham and Queens both competed with one boat in Annapolis, Maryland that placed seventh and 18th, respectively. Hobart & William Smith fielded four boats that placed eighth, 14th, 15th, and 16th.
ODU’s boat that finished in ninth was manned by Pierce Brindley and because ODU tied with HWS the two had to compete in a head-to-head tiebreaker where HWS came out in front. ODU’s boat that finished in sixth was manned by Antonio Barabino that had two high-place finishes, in the ninth and 13th race ODU finished second and first, respectively.
The Monarchs competed at the Women’s ACC Round One and placed 10th out of 18 competitors. Stanford finished ahead of the pack in first while Tufts (163) edged second place over Yale (166) by just three points. Fordham finished in fourth and MIT placed fifth while Georgetown ended the weekend in sixth.
Marina Conde and Molly Hanson both competed for the Monarchs in the A division while Morgan Auth, Gianna Dewey, Arabella Duer, and Petra Humphrey competed in the B division.
Host Dartmouth finished in seventh, Charleston placed eighth, and Hobart & William Smith landed ninth. Rhode Island, Naval Academy, and Miami placed 11th, 12th, and 13th, respectively. St. Mary’s (Md.) finished in 14th ahead of Boston in 15th and NC State in 16th. Vermont and Princeton rounded out the event in 17th and 18th, respectively.
The final event that was completed this weekend was the Charleston Regatta in Charleston, South Carolina and hosted by the College of Charleston. The hosts finished in first but had to go to a head-to-head tiebreaker against Eckerd because both sides were knotted at 76 points. NC State placed third and South Florida earned fourth while Vermont captured a fifth place finish. Florida State, Hawaii, and Jacksonville ended the weekend in sixth, seventh, and eighth, respectively.
