GREENVILLE, N.C. – Old Dominion volleyball dropped its final match of the No Quarter Invitational, falling 3-0 to Maryland on Saturday afternoon at East Carolina’s Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum.
The Monarchs finish non-conference play 4-7 overall, while the Terrapins move to 10-1.
Maryland 3, ODU 0
The first set saw Old Dominion take an early 5-3 lead thanks to kills by Elisa Maggi and Emma Schelah and an attack error by Maryland’s Ava Brown. The Terps put together a 5-1 run to jump ahead, 11-8 and led 15-10 at the first media timeout. The break worked out in the Monarchs’ favor as three-straight Leilani Lawrence service aces highlighted a 5-0 response that knotted the set at 15-15. UMD outpaced ODU the rest of the way though and grabbed the first set point, 25-19.
A Rita Benidio service ace evened the second set at 5-5 in the early going. After an Emma Schelah successful attack tied the score again at 6-6, the Terps took off with four unanswered points. ODU was unable to slow down the Maryland offense, and the Terps won the set by a 25-14 tally.
Erica Duffy assisted Lawrence to knot the third set at 7-7. A solo block by Maryland’s Eva Rohrback and three ODU errors helped the Terps retake the lead, 11-8. Emma DiRocco terminated a ball from Duffy to keep the Monarchs within striking distance at 20-16, but the Terps held on for a 25-18 final to close out the match.
Lawrence led ODU with nine kills, Weronika Urbanksa swung for a .778 clip and tied her season high with seven kills, Maggi also had seven kills, and Schelah contributed six. Duffy accounted for 32 assists while Lawrence continued her strong serving with four aces. Abby MacMillan made her collegiate debut and served one ace, while Benidio had the team’s other ace. Maggi and libero Ashlyn Gent both recorded five digs, and Maggi and DiRocco made one block each.
After hitting below the .200 mark in the first two sets, the Monarchs combined for a .300 clip in the third. ODU served more aces, 6-4, but UMD led in every other category. There were 17 ties and only nine lead changes in the match.
