GREENVILLE, N.C. – Old Dominion volleyball took a 2-0 lead in its first-ever meeting with Campbell on Friday, but the Monarchs were unable to close out the Camels, falling in five sets at East Carolina’s No Quarter Invitational.
The Silver and Blue fall to 4-6 on the season and the Camels are now 4-6 as well.
Campbell 3, ODU 2
Tied at 6-6 in the first set, a couple of Campbell errors helped the Monarchs pull ahead, 8-6. The Camels caught back up at 10-10, but Elisa Maggi terminated a ball from Emma Schelah before Schelah and Wiktoria Zagumny blocked an attack attempt by CU’s Leah Freesemann. Maggi and Leilani Lawrence both had good swings as ODU led 15-12 at the first media timeout. Maggi scored her fifth kill of the set and followed that up with an ace to make it a 23-20 lead, and Zagumny assisted Emma DiRocco to secure set point at 25-23.
Adrienne Peji served an ace to help build a 4-1 advantage at the start of the second set, though CU rattled off four-straight points to overtake the Monarchs. Old Dominion trailed 15-13 midway through the set, but put together a 4-0 run coming out of the media timeout. After the Silver and Blue burned a timeout with the score even at 18-18, Rita Benidio converted an attack before the Camels committed back-to-back errors. Benidio then served a pair of errors to cap off a late 4-0 run as the Monarchs captured another set, 25-19.
The two sides were tied at 13-13 in the third set when ODU scored six unanswered points. The Camels answered right back with an 8-0 push to seize control, 21-19. A CU attack error helped the Monarchs cut the deficit to a point, 21-20, but the Camels kept the match going with a 25-21 decision.
ODU went up 8-5 in the fourth set thanks to a solo block by Lawrence and another block from Lawrence and DiRocco. CU’s Hailey Heytvelt served an ace to knot the set at 11-11, and the Camels then won six-straight rallies to pull away, 17-12. The Monarchs were unable to close the distance as CU forced a fifth set, 25-19.
Erica Duffy assisted Maggi to put the Monarchs in front, 5-4 in the decisive set. CU captured five of the next six points to go ahead, 9-6. Ashlyn Gent then assisted Benidio on a kill, but the Camels took off with a 6-0 run to close out the match, 15-7.
Maggi scored 15 kills and Katie Rakoski had 14 to pace the ODU attack. Zagumny turned in a 32-assist, 15-dig double-double, and Maggi and Benidio served two aces each. Maggi also recorded a double-double with 12 digs, and Gent led the back row with 21 digs. Five different Monarchs made multiple blocks, paced by Schelah with six.
ODU combined to hit .173, but Campbell swung for a .196 mark. The Monarchs did edge the Camels in blocks, 9-6. There were 35 ties, 12 of them in the third set, and 14 lead changes.
