NORFOLK, Va. – Old Dominion volleyball travels to Greenville, North Carolina this weekend for the No Quarter Invitational, hosted by East Carolina at Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum.
ODU will open the tournament against the host Pirates on Thursday at 7 p.m., with the match streamed on ESPN+. The Silver and Blue will then return for a 2 p.m. match versus Campbell on Friday before concluding the trip with a 1 p.m. match with Maryland on Saturday. Live stats will be available for all three matches.
The Series
Thursday’s match will mark just the second meeting between ODU and East Carolina. The Monarchs hosted the Pirates on Sept. 10, 2022 in the final match of the Quest for the Crown, a meeting that went to the visitors, 3-0. Alumni Myah Conway led the Silver and Blue with 10 kills and 11.5 points in the loss and represented ODU on the All-Tournament Team.
ODU and Campbell will meet for the first time on Friday, while Saturday will be the third-ever meeting ODU and Maryland, with the Terrapins holding a 2-0 lead in the series. The two teams first met on Sept. 1, 2023 on the first day of Navy’s Kristen Dickmann Invitational with UMD downing ODU, 3-0. The Monarchs and Terrapins faced off again on Sept. 5 last season at the UMBC Tournament, with the Monarchs falling in straight sets.
About ODU
Old Dominion hosted the Monarch Invitational last weekend, and the Monarchs (4-4) secured a 3-0 win over Navy on Friday and a 3-1 win over Maryland Eastern Shore on Sunday. ODU hit .415 against Navy, the third-best attack percentage in program history, and the Monarchs set a new program record with 17 blocks against UMES. The Midshipmen defeated the Hawks, 3-1 in a neutral match last Saturday.
First year outside hitter Leilani Lawrence currently leads the Sun Belt in most offensive categories. The Tampa, Florida native is first in the league in points (168.5), points per set (5.27), kills (141), kills per set (4.41), total attacks (342), attacks per set (10.69), service aces (22), and aces per set (0.69). She ranks eighth in the country in points per set, 11th in points, 12th in kills per set and service aces, 15th in aces per set, and 21st in kills.
Elisa Maggi is second on the team with 78 kills (2.44 per set) and seven aces, while Rita Benidio has also served seven aces. Wiktoria Zagumny and Erica Duffy have split starts at setter, with the pair owning 127 and 125 assists, respectively. Liberto Ashlyn Gent leads ODU’s back line with 76 digs (2.45 per set), followed by Lawrence with 57 and Maggi with 54. At the net, Emma Schelah has made 30 blocks and Emma DiRocco is right behind her with 28.
The Monarchs enter the week ranked fifth in the Sun Belt with 57 service aces.
About East Carolina
The Pirates (5-4) started off the season with a 4-0 winning streak, but dropped the final two matches at the Clemson Tournament on Sept. 4-6 and then dropped two of three matches at the DEACTOWN Invitational last weekend. After sweeping tournament host Wake Forest, 3-0 last Friday, ECU fell 3-2 to East Tennessee State on Saturday and 3-0 to Georgia Southern on Sunday. Kai Bailey and Brooklyn Allison were named to the All-Tournament Team.
Ellie Pate, a fourth year outside hitter from Auburn, Alabama, has proven to be the primary threat on offense. She currently ranks second in the American Conference and 16th nationally with 379 attack attempts. She also leads the American with 131 kills and 145 points, is second in the league with 10.83 attacks per set, and is third with 3.74 kills per set.
Aulie Huff has 69 kills (2.03 per set) and has served eight aces, Taryn Gilreath has also served eight aces, and Allison owns seven aces. Gilreath and Brook Watkins split time at the setter position with 160 and 154 assists, respectively. Allison leads the Pirates with 95 digs (2.79 per set), Angeles Alderete is second with 74, and Pate is third with 66. Bailey is the team’s top blocker with 32, followed by Huff with 27.
ECU enters the week ranked third in the American with 77 blocks and is fifth in the conference in both total attacks (1,124) and digs (443). The Pirates were picked to finish eighth in the American Preseason Coaches’ Poll with Alderete and Gilreath earning Preseason All-Conference honors. Head coach Adler Augustin is in his seventh season at ECU and has compiled a record of 82-88.
About Campbell
The Camels (3-5) hosted the Fairfield Inn and Suites Dunn Campbell Invitational last weekend. The Orange and Black fell 3-0 to Ball State on Friday and split their two matches on Saturday, defeating Stetson, 3-1 before suffering a 3-1 setback against Furman. Third year outside hitter and Virginia Beach, Virginia native Victoria Tupy earned All-Tournament Team honors after tallying 33 kills and 33 digs throughout the three matches.
Tupy leads the team with 96 points and 96 kills (2.61 per set), Emma McCartney is second with 89 points and 80 kills (3.64 per set), and Hailey Heytvelt is third with 76 points and 54 kills (1.69 per set). McCartney leads the CAA with 9.91 attacks per set and ranks fourth in the conference in kills per set and points per set (4.05). Setters Hannah Pattie and Lauren Wheeler own 163 and 127 assists, respectively, while Ella Duong and Pattie have combined to serve 19 aces.
On defense, Sadie Johnston has a team-high 75 digs (2.42 per set) and Tupy is next with 62 (1.88 per set). Heytvelt has made a team-best 29 blocks, including seven solo blocks, and Maddie Lambers is at 21 blocks.
Campbell ranks first in the CAA with 35.91 attacks per set, second with 14.15 digs per set, third with 467 digs, fourth with 12.52 kills per set, and fifth with 1,185 attacks and 11.42 assists per set. The Camels were picked to finish fifth in the CAA Preseason Poll with Heytvelt named to the Preseason All-CAA Team and Lambers and McCartney earning Honorable Mentions nods. Head coach Greg Coral is in his 14th season in Buies Creek, North Carolina and owns a career record of 204-183.
About Maryland
The Terrapins (7-1) have won six in a row and hosted the Maryland Tournament last weekend in College Park, Maryland. UMD won all three of its matches in straight sets, defeating Seton Hall on Friday, Princeton on Saturday, and Saint Peter’s on Sunday. Haley Melby, Sara Toth, and Raina Chwialkowski were named to the All-Tournament Team.
Melby and Sydney Bryant pace the attack with 85 and 80 kills, respectively. Toth is Maryland’s primary setter and ranks fourth in the Big Ten with 288 assists and is also fourth in all of Division I with 11.52 assists per set. Chwialkowski leads UMD’s servers with 12 aces, also has a team-high 96 digs, and ranks third in the conference with 3.84 digs per set. Duru Gökçen has made 33 blocks, good for fifth in the Big Ten, and is second in the league with 1.38 blocks per set. Teammate Ava Brown is not far behind her with 31 blocks.
The Terrapins rank sixth in the country in hitting percentage (.329), 16th in assists per set (13.16), 17th in win percentage (87.5%), 18th in opponent hitting percentage (.147), and 24th in kills per set (13.88).
Maryland was picked to finish 18th in the Big Ten Preseason Poll and is led by ninth-year head coach Adam Hughes, who is 117-132 during his time in College Park.
