The Series

Old Dominion holds a slight lead in the all-time series, 6-4. The teams played four games against each other in 2024, with the Monarchs hosting the Jaguars on March 29-30 during the regular season. ODU took the first two games, 8-2 and 8-3, but USA avoided the sweep with a 5-3 final in the series finale.

The two teams then met again on Tuesday, May 21 in the opening round of the Sun Belt Conference Championship in Montgomery, Alabama. The Monarchs entered the tournament as the No. 8 seed and the Jaguars came in as the No. 9 seed. A single-elimination game, ODU trailed 2-0 but pulled even in the bottom of the fifth when Maverick Stallings, who was named Sun Belt Player of the Week the day before, hit a two-run home run. The Monarchs then took the lead for good in the sixth as Kenny Levari singled, took second on a passed ball, and scored on a Jake Ticer hit through the left side. USA threatened to tie the game with one out and two on in the ninth inning, but Jacob Gomez struck out a batter and induced a ground out to third to send ODU into the double-elimination bracket.

Around the Horn

The Monarchs (12-12, 2-4 Sun Belt) split their two midweek games, falling 6-3 to William & Mary on Tuesday but bouncing back with a 7-2 win at Richmond on Wednesday. In the road victory over the Spiders, Richmond tied the game at 2-2 in the sixth inning, but the Monarchs scored five runs down the stretch to pull away.
