CLEMSON, S.C. – Old Dominion women’s tennis competed in the Clemson Duckworth Duels, which included three days of play against Western Carolina, Furman, Clemson and Notre Dame from Oct. 3 to Oct. 5.

“Overall I feel we performed well this weekend,” head coach Dominic Manilla said. “We were able to secure some key results in singles and doubles. Most notably, Victoria Matasova is emerging as one of our programs top players of which I’m very proud. I’m impressed with our fitness and I’m pleased with where we are at this point in the year.”

The Monarchs opened the tournament with a singles matchup against Furman, where they won all five matches. Victoria Matasova downed Elle Warren on court one (3-6, 6-3, 6-4) with Ulyana Romanova besting Sasha Dimitrov on court two (6-7, 6-4, 6-2). No. 3 Lidiia Rasskouskaia and No. 4 Marina Markina downed respective opponents Lillie Murphy (7-5, 6-7, 6-2) and Macy Hitchcock (6-3, 6-2), while Mya Byrd defeated Bianca Ceroni on court six (2-6, 7-6, 6-4) in a tight battle.

Old Dominion then moved to a doubles matchup against Notre Dame, though Byrd teamed up with Clemson’s Sophia Clayton and defeated Furman’s Lily Doherty and WCU’s Zoe Lui on court two (6-2). No. 4 Matasova and Markina fell to Notre Dame’s Bianca Molnar and Bojana Pozder (6-2), though Rasskouskaia and Romanova grabbed the win against Fighting Irish Akari Matusono and Sophia Holod (7-2) on court six.

To begin day two, Byrd and Doherty teamed up to face Clayton and WCU’s Axelle Van Beurden on court two for doubles, though they fell 6-4. No. 7 Rasskouskaia and Romanova also fell to Furman’s Murphy and Dimitrov in a close 7-6 battle, however, Matasova and Markina were able to secure the win against Warren and Hitchcock on court eight with a 6-2 victory.

In a singles matchup against Clemson to finish the day, No. 1 Matasova had the lone win against the Tigers after she downed Ami Smejkalova 6-2, 1-6, 6-4. No. 2 Jade Groen and No. 3 Candela Yecora defeated respective Monarchs Romanova (6-4, 6-0) and Rasskouskaia (6-2, 7-6), while No. 4 Romana Cisovska bested Markina (6-3, 6-3) and Artemis Aslanisvili beat Byrd (6-1, 6-1) on court six.

Old Dominion ended the tournament with singles matches against Notre Dame. Rasskouskaia had the only victory against the Fighting Irish, where she downed Matsuno (6-4, 6-7, 6-4) on court three. No. 1 Molnar defeated Matasova 6-4, 6-7, 6-1, as No. 2 Pozder downed Romanova 6-3, 6-0. No. 4 Holod and No. 5 Rulie Hanford bested Markina (6-3, 7-6) and Byrd (6-4, 6-1) respectively.

Rounding out the day, ODU took on Clemson in one final doubles competition, though Byrd played with Van Beurden in a matchup against No. 2 Clayton and Furman’s Molly Robinson, where they fell 6-4. No. 1 Rasskouskaia and Romanova defeated Smejkalova and Gaia Parravinci 6-3, though Matasova and Markina fell to Cisovska and Yecora on court three, 6-2.

The Monarchs continue their fall campaign in Blacksburg, Va. as part of an ITA Regional Tournament from Thursday, Oct. 16 to Tuesday, Oct. 21.
