ODU Volleyball Headed to Baltimore for the UMBC Tournament

On Friday, the Monarchs will play William & Mary at 10 a.m. and Maryland at 3:30 p.m. ODU will then face the host Retrievers on Saturday at 4 p.m.

NORFOLK, Va. – Old Dominion volleyball will be in Baltimore, Maryland this weekend to play in a tournament hosted by UMBC. On Friday, the Monarchs will play William & Mary at 10 a.m. and Maryland at 3:30 p.m. ODU will then face the host Retrievers on Saturday at 4 p.m.

Only UMBC matches will be streamed, though live stats will be available for each match. Tickets can be purchased online for $7 or $12 at the ticket booth. Additionally, for groups of 15+, tickets can be bought for $5 online. There is free parking in the Stadium Lot at Chesapeake Employers Insurance Arena or along Hilltop Circle.

About ODU

The Monarchs (0-3) hosted the Quest for the Crown tournament this past weekend, falling 3-1 to both Fairfield and West Virginia on Friday and 3-0 to Towson on Saturday. Elisa Maggi leads the team with 35 kills (3.18 per set), Katie Rakoski is next with 25 kills (2.27 per set), and LeeAnne Lowery is third with 18 (1.64 per set). Setter Wiktoria Zagumny tallied 86 assists (7.82 per set) while Kate Kilpatrick, Maggi and Rita Benidio combined for 12 service aces.

On the other side of the net, Kilpatrick owns a team-high 50 digs, followed by Zagumny with 26 and Maggi with 24. Lowery and Emma Schelah have made six blocks each, and Maggi is close behind them with four.

About William & Mary

The Tribe (1-1) opened the season at the Winthrop Tournament in Rock Hill, South Carolina. W&M swept Charlotte, 3-0 on Friday, but fell 3-1 to Davidson on Saturday. Audrey Brcka finished the weekend with 22 kills and paces the attack with 3.14 kills per set. Setters Shylah Swope and Beatriz Silva had 38 and 23 assists, respectively while Devereaux Hoxsie served three aces. Avery Horejsi owns a team-best 34 digs, and Ryann Love and Katherine Arnason have combined for 26 blocks.

W&M was picked to finish sixth in the CAA Preseason Coaches’ Poll with Olivia Esposito and Nicole Smith named to the Preseason All-Conference Team. The Tribe is led by third-year head coach Ryan Adams. Friday’s match will mark the third meeting between the two programs, with ODU leading 2-0 in the all-time series.

About Maryland

The Terrapins (0-2) were in Conway, South Carolina for the first weekend of the season. After falling 3-2 to the Chanticleers on Friday, Maryland came up short 3-1 to North Carolina on Saturday. Ajack Malual and Haley Melby are the primary threats on offense with 28 and 22 kills, respectively. Lilly Wagner is the primary setter with 56 assists and Melby is the top server with four aces. Ally Williams is the leader in digs with 23, Olivia Ruy is next with 16 digs, and Wagner and Duru Gökçen have recorded four blocks each.

Head coach Adam Hughes is in his eighth year with the program. The Terps were picked 16th in the Big Ten Preseason Poll. ODU and Maryland have only met once before on Sept. 1, 2023 at Navy’s Kristen Dickmann Invitational, a match that went to the Terps, 3-0.

About UMBC

The Retrievers (1-1) dropped their first match of the K-State Invitational, 3-0 to the host Wildcats on Friday, but earned their first win of the season with a 3-1 final versus Delaware on Saturday. For the tournament, Hannah Dobbs and Jaylynn Brown both scored 27 kills, Izzy Ostvig racked up 45 assists, and Ema Djordjevic served three aces. Hannah Howard led UMBC’s back row with 37 digs while Helen Frankovich made 11 blocks.

Head coach Kasey Crider is in her fourth year leading the program. The team was picked to finish tied for second in the America East Preseason Poll with Dobbs representing the Retrievers on the Preseason All-Conference Team. ODU and UMBC are meeting for the second time after the Retrievers defeated the Monarchs, 3-1 on Sept. 16, 2022 at the VCU Invitational.

ODU will be back on its home court on Sept. 12-14 when the Monarchs host Delaware and Villanova in the Old Dominion Invitational.
