CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Old Dominion University Women’s Tennis competed in a trio of dual matches over the weekend against Georgia, Charlotte and Duke. The Monarchs fell to Georgia, defeated Charlotte and defeated the Blue Devils.
In the Monarchs’ opener on Friday against Georgia, Marina Markina picked up the lone ODU win over Emma Dong, 6-4, 6-4.
Against the 49’ers, ranked No. 119 in the country, Kira Matushkina defeated Ni Xi 6-7 (7-5), 6-3, 7-5, while Victoria Matasova beat Sara Suchankova 7-6 (7-4), 7-5. Ulyana Romanova knocked off Shona Nakano 7-6 (9-7), 6-1.
In the finale on Sunday against Duke, Matushkina beat No. 49 Liv Hoede 6-4, 5-7, (10-1), while Matasova defeated No. 14 Irina Balus 6-3, 6-4. Romanova knocked off No. 61 Shavit Kimchi, 6-3, 6-3.
“It was a solid opening weekend for our team. We had impressive performances throughout our lineup in singles and doubles. Our most notable results were definitely Sunday afternoon with Kira, Vika, and Ulyana each earning impressive wins against a talented Duke squad. I’m proud of the grit this team competes with and I feel we are all eager to keep getting better.”
