NORFOLK, Va. – Old Dominion men’s tennis swept rival James Madison, 4-0, on Saturday afternoon as part of the Townebank Royal Rivalry.
Both teams began the doubles matches off strong, with No. 3 Aryan Saleh and Thomas Nelson downing Francisco Sinopoli and Harrison Lee by a 6-2 score for ODU, though No. 2 Zachary Fleishman and Edson Sanchez defeated Adam Majchrzak and Jean-Karim Olivier de Sardan (6-2) to leave the point to Court Five. In a tight race, No. 1 Connor Van Schalkwyk and Yanis Moundir gave the Monarchs an early 1-0 lead with a win over Esteve Agusti and Aurelien Schmitt (6-4).
No. 4 Olivier de Sardan kicked off the singles matches with a strong 6-1, 6-1 win against Sinopoli. No. 5 Saleh followed suit after downing Dennis Wiebe (6-1, 6-3) to put the Monarchs one point away from clinching the rivalry win. No. 3 Moundir called game shortly after, besting Fleishman (7-5, 6-3) to secure ODU’s sweep.
No. 1 Van Schalkwyk’s, No. 2 Majchrzak’s, and No. 6 Nelson’s matches against respective opponents Schmitt (3-6, 6-2, 4-3), Agusti (4-6, 4-5), and Sanchez (6-2, 6-7, 2-0) were suspended.
Old Dominion stays home to host Southern Miss and Louisiana next weekend in its regular season finale on April 12 and April 13.
