MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – Old Dominion lacrosse falls to Robert Morris in overtime as part of an 11-10 thriller on Wednesday afternoon.
Sarah Murrell began the first quarter for Old Dominion (8-5) by finding the back of the net under three minutes in, though Robert Morris’ (3-7) Madison Prietz responded a minute later with a goal of her own. Sydney Taylor and Murrell each netted one in with under six minutes left to play, putting ODU up 3-1 to begin the afternoon.
The first goal of the second quarter didn’t come until almost the nine-minute mark, Ella Bowen added onto Old Dominion’s lead by finding the back of the net. Colonial Vivian LaMange scored two minutes later, but Lydia Laney would grab the last goal of the quarter to give the Monarchs a 5-2 lead heading into halftime.
Robert Morris did not allow a single goal from Old Dominion in the third quarter. Meanwhile, Jenna Irwin and LaMange closed the gap with two goals under a minute apart from each other before Mia Berthoff knotted the score at five with nine minutes left to play. Berthoff would grab two more goals by the end of the quarter, recording a hat trick and allowing the Colonials to go into the fourth quarter up 8-5 after another goal from Irwin.
Kylie O’Donnell brought the momentum back for ODU with a goal three minutes into the fourth quarter. Irwin responded with another hat trick for Robert Morris a minute later, though Murrell recorded her own with a goal shortly after. Alex Kulinksi brought the Monarchs just one goal away from tying the game, though Irwin scored once again four minutes later. Murrell brought ODU back to just a one-point deficit a minute later, and with just fourteen seconds left to play, Kulinski found the back of the net to force the game into overtime.
Despite a hard-fought effort, Gia Anthony would give Robert Morris the win by scoring with just eight seconds left to go in overtime.
Murrell led the Monarchs in scoring with four goals, with Kulinski following suit with two goals while Taylor, Bowen, Laney, and O’Donnell each accounted for one. Murrell, Kulinski, and Callie Culhane all led the team in assists as well with one each. Goalie Brynn Bowen, meanwhile, recorded five saves on 11 shots.
The Monarchs return home on Saturday, April 5 to host East Carolina in the team’s third American Athletic Conference game of the season at 12 p.m. in the L.R. Hill Sports Complex.
