ATLANTA, Ga. – Old Dominion men’s tennis opened Sun Belt Conference play with a 4-0 win over Georgia State on Wednesday afternoon.
No. 2 doubles duo Yanis Moundir and Thomas Nelson began the day for ODU with a 6-3 win over McKane Johnson and Ethan Vander Auwera, and No. 1 brothers Codie and Connor Van Schalkwyk claimed the doubles point for the Monarchs shortly after by downing Edward Tymes and Aryan Jit Singh (6-4). Jean-Karim Olivier de Sardan’s and Aryan Saleh’s match against Gabriele Datei and Brana Soyler was suspended at 5-4.
The Monarchs only continued to add onto their score as No. 6 Saleh defeated Vander Auwera (6-1, 6-1) to begin the singles matches. No. 5 Olivier de Sardan took the next point for ODU with a dominant win over Johnson (6-1, 6-0), and in a battle to win the match, No. 3 Adam Majchrazak downed Jit Singh (6-4, 6-4) to give Old Dominion its first SBC win of the season. No. 1 Connor Van Schalkwyk’s, No. 2 Codie Van Schalkwyk’s, and No. 4 Moundir’s matches against respective opponents Soyler (6-2, 4-6), Tymes (3-6, 6-3), and Datei (7-5, 3-5) were suspended.
Old Dominion returns home next weekend to take on Georgia Southern on Saturday, March 22 and Coastal Carolina on Sunday, March 23 in the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center.
