GREENVILLE, S.C. – Old Dominion lacrosse suffered its first loss of the season in a close game at Furman with an 11-9 final.

Monarch Sarah Murrell kicked off the first quarter by scoring two goals within two minutes, though fellow freshman Lily Toole would find the back of the net with five minutes to go to put Furman on the board.

The Paladins (1-0) continued on to score just twenty seconds into the second quarter, made possible by Anna Roser on a free position shot. Roser would assist teammate Sophia Buzelis less than two minutes later to give Furman a 3-2 lead, though ODU responded with a goal from Ella Bowen. To end the half, Callie Culhane picked up her seventh goal of the season to put the Monarchs (2-1) up 4-3 as they headed into the locker room.

Furman came out blazing in the third quarter, with Paige Harman, Sophia Buzelis, and Toole all scoring within the first six minutes. ODU responded with back-to-back goals from Alex Kulinski and Culhane, though Harman would grab her second goal of the quarter two minutes later. Kylie O’Donnell nagged her first goal of the season to bring the Monarchs down just 8-7, and while Toole would score a hat trick, Kulinski ended the third with a goal, making the score 9-8 in Furman’s favor.

Paladin’s Roser would grab Furman’s tenth goal of the game at the 11:41 mark, with Toole scoring her fourth goal with five minutes left. Murrell was able to secure her second hat trick of the season two minutes later, though the Monarchs were unable to regain the lead as Furman held on.

Old Dominion will finish their weekend in Boiling Springs, North Carolina as they travel to take on Gardner-Webb on Sunday at 12 p.m.
