NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion men’s basketball team heads out on a two-game road trip to rematch App State on Wednesday, Jan. 29 before another chapter in the Royal Rivalry against James Madison on Saturday, Feb. 1.
Both games will have live stats and will be streamed on ESPN+. Andy Mashaw and Dennis Wolff will be on the call for ESPN Radio 94.1.
LAST TIME OUT
App State’s CJ Huntley was too much to handle, scoring 26 points and grabbing 12 rebounds as Old Dominion fell 62-43 on Jan. 16, 2025 in Norfolk. ODU struggled shooting, going 30% from the field. The Mountaineers got out to a 14-1 start in the first five minutes of action and the Monarchs did not recover.
James Madison had three players scoring 15 or more enroute to the Monarchs dropping a 74-60 loss on Jan. 22, 2025 in Norfolk. AJ Smith (21), Mark Freeman (16), and Bryce Lindsay (15) fueled the Dukes to victory. The score was tied 25-25 with 3:04 left in the first quarter before a 12-4 Duke run gave control of the game to the visitors at halftime. ODU didn’t regain the lead in the second half, Robert Davis Jr. finished with 23 points and Jaden Johnson pitched in 14 points in 35 minutes of action.
ABOUT ODU:
Old Dominion men’s basketball went 1-1 last week. Losing to James Madison 74-60 before dispatching Coastal Carolina 74-52 on Jan. 25, 2025. ODU has a 9-12 overall record and is 5-4 in the Sun Belt. The Monarchs are eighth in the Sun Belt standings, 320 in NET ranking, 301 in Kenpom, and have a -8.1 BPI.
Robert Davis Jr. is the Monarch’s leading scorer (15.9 ppg). Davis leads the team in three-point attempts and makes (69-205). The sophomore transfer from UMass averages 3.45 made threes per game which has him tied for seventh in the nation, while his 69 makes from deep are tied for eighth in the NCAA. In the Sun Belt, Davis ranks fourth in scoring (15.9 ppg), second in free throw percentage (83.3%), first in total three-pointers made (69), and is first in minutes per game (35.18).
Sean Durugordon is the team’s second leading scorer, averaging 13.9 ppg. The native of Harlem, New York, is ODU’s leading rebounder averaging 8.1 rpg. His average of 3.81 offensive rebounds per game is ninth best in the nation and ranks first in the Sun Belt. He is the team’s second leading free throw shooter, hitting 77.8% at the stripe. Durugordon ranks 12th in the Sun Belt in scoring (14.1 ppg), third in rebounding (8.1 rpg), and fifth in free throw percentage (78%).
Stephaun Walker is the team’s second leading rebounder, grabbing an average of 7.1 per game. His 2.76 offensive rebounds per game average ranks 84th in the NCAA. The transfer from Robert Morris ranks sixth in the Sun Belt in rebounds per game (7.1) and fourth in offensive rebounds (2.76).
Caelum Swanton-Rodger, a junior transfer from Maryland, swats away 1.75 blocks per game, his 35 blocks this season ranks 44th in the nation and second in the Sun Belt. Freshman Jaden Johnson has started all 21 games this season at point guard. He leads the Monarchs in assists per game (3.9) which ranks seventh in the Sun Belt. The native of Walker Mill, Maryland is fourth in the Sun Belt in minutes played (33.58).
ODU averages of 67.8 points per game, shoots 40% from the floor and 27.3% from behind the arc. They hold a +3-rebounding margin and grab 39.5 per game while dishing out 11 assists per game. The Monarchs have swatted away 69 shots this season while swiping 109 steals. In the Sun Belt, ODU ranks first in offensive rebounds per game (14.43) and they have the second-best rebounding offense (39.52). The Monarchs are the 12th ranked offensive rebounding team in the nation, averaging 14.43 offensive rebounds per game.
ABOUT APP STATE
The Mountaineers sit at a 12-8 overall record and are 6-3 in the Sun Belt. Coached by sixth year head coach Dustin Kerns, App State is 6-1 in their last seven games as they prepare for Old Dominion. The Mountaineers are third in the Sun Belt Preseason and are 127th in NET Ranking, 116th in Kenpom, and have a 1.5 BPI.
Myles Tate is App State’s leading scorer averaging 15.6 ppg followed by CJ Huntley averaging 15.1 ppg. Both Huntley and Tate earned preseason honors as Huntley was named to the Sun Belt’s second team and Tate was named to the third team. Jalil Beaubrun is the Mountaineers third leading scorer (9.3 ppg) and second leading rebounder (4.8).
App State averages 68.7 ppg and concedes 62.2 for a +6.6-scoring margin. The Mountaineers shoot 44.7% from the field and 35.5% from deep. Appalachian State averages 37.6 rpg and gives up 35.6 rpg for a +2-rebounding margin, has dished out 264 assists (13.2 per game), and made 120 steals and 75 blocks. In the Sun Belt, App State has the second-best scoring defense (62.15), field goal percentage (44.7%), field goal percentage defense (37.5%), and three-point percentage (35.5%). The Mountaineers rank first in three-point field goal percentage defense (27.4%), defensive rebounds per game (27.95), and rank fourth in assist/turnover ratio (1.14).
ABOUT JMU
James Madison holds a 12-9 overall record and is 5-4 in the Sun Belt. The Dukes are coached by first year head coach Preston Spradlin. James Madison is ranked 144th in NET rankings, 145th in Kenpom, and has a 2.1 BPI.
JMU has four players averaging double-figure scoring numbers, Mark Freeman (12.8), Bryce Lindsay (12.5), Elijah Hutchins-Everett (11.2), and Xavier Brown (11). Hutchins-Everett and AJ Smith have started all 21 games for JMU. Lindsay is the team’s sixth man and leads the Dukes with 53 made threes on 42.4% shooting from deep.
The Dukes average 73.4 points per game and have a +3.7-scoring margin. James Madison shoots 44.6% from the field and 35% from three. JMU grabs 37 rebounds per game and holds a +5.1-rebounding margin. The Dukes dish 12.3 assists per game, swipe 6.1 steals, and average 3.2 blocks per game. James Madison ranks second in the Sun Belt in free throw percentage (73.8%), third in three-point percentage (35%) and field goal percentage (44.6%), and rebounding margin (+5.1). The Dukes rank first in rebounding defense (31.90) and defensive rebounding percentage (75.2%).
