NORFOLK, Va. -- The Old Dominion men's tennis team took on a pair of 757 foes on Wednesday and came away with a pair of wins. They defeated Norfolk State 4-0 and then William & Mary 5-2 at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center.
"I am proud of the guys today. This is already our eighth match of the season and second of the day, and you could see mental fatigue kicking in," said ODU Head Coach Dominik Mueller. I think that cost us some closer second sets than it should have been but great job taking care of business. We are looking forward to an off weekend to recharge our batteries."
ODU 5, W&M 2
In doubles, the Monarchs opened with wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots to take the team point. At No. 2, the 34th-ranked duo of Jakob Cadonau and Cosme Rolland de Ravel took a 6-2 win over Satchell Benn and Oliver Hague.
The clinching point was at No. 3 by the duo of Maxime Mareschal-Hay and Yanis Moundir with a 6-3 win over Alexandre Leblanc and Alexander Karman to put ODU up 1-0.
Singles saw the Monarchs take an early 2-0 lead on the strength of a 6-0, 6-1 win by Connor van Schalkwyk over Leblanc. A Cadonau win at No. 6 by a 6-3, 7-6 score over Nikita Bortnichek put ODU up 3-0.
Codie van Schalkwyk clinched the match with a 6-3, 7-6 (10-8) win over Leblanc for the 4-0 lock up. Yanis Moundir finished it with a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 3 over Satchell Benn.
ODU 4, NORFOLK STATE 0
In the opening match of the day, the Monarchs swept four singles matches in straight sets to claim the victory over Norfolk State.
Connor van Schalkwyk got the hosts on the board first with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Vladisav Gorbatenko at No. 1. Cadonau put ODU up 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Boris Lunin at No. 5. The Monarchs finished off the win with a pair of 6-2, 6-0 victories by Rolland de Ravel at No. 2 and Moundir at No. 3.
NATIONAL RANKINGS
The ITA Individual Rankings were released on Wednesday morning and a pair of ODU doubles teams are ranked among the top 35 nationally in the first spring individual listings.
Connor van Schalkwyk and Codie van Schalkwyk are currently 19th nationally, while Jakob Cadonau and Cosme Rolland de Ravel are ranked 34th. Entering Wednesday, the van Schalkwyks are 9-4 at No. 1 spot, while Cadonau and Rolland de Ravel are 8-3 at No. 2.
