Men's Tennis Finishes Day One At Blue Gray Tournament

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Old Dominion men's tennis team finished their first day of competition at the 76th annual Blue-Gray Tournament with a 4-0 loss to 31st-ranked Princeton and a 1-0 lead on 64th-ranked Rice.
 
The tournament format had teams playing one full match on Friday and the doubles portion of their second match. Saturday morning the teams will conclude their second match with singles and then have their third and final match of the event.
 
Against Princeton, the Tigers took doubles points with 6-2 win at No. 1 and a 6-3 win at No. 3. In singles, Princeton garnered wins at No. 1,2 and 6 to claim the victory. ODU had taken first sets at No. 3 with Cosme Rolland de Ravel (6-4), No. 4 with Yanis Moundir (7-5), and No. 5 with Aryan Saleh (6-4), but were trailing in the second sets of each when the match was clinched.
 
They followed the Princeton match with doubles against former Conference USA rival Rice and will take a 1-0 lead into an 11:30 a.m. EST Saturday morning resumption. Moundir and Maxime Mareschal-Hay started with a 6-2 win at No. 3, while the 43rd-ranked duo of Rolland de Ravel and Jakob Cadonau clinched the point with a 6-4 win at No. 2. Codie van Schalkwyk and Connor van Schalkwyk, ranked 16th nationally, were in a tiebreaker at No. 1 when ODU clinched.
 
Following the finish of the Rice match, the Monarchs will face either 51st-ranked Boise State of 27th-ranked Middle Tennessee to conclude the tournament.
