The Series
Saturday’s game marks the second-ever meeting between the two programs. The two teams both reached the 2000 NCAA Tournament as part of the Midwest Region, with the Lady Monarchs as a No. 4 seed after winning the CAA Championship and the Mustangs earning an at-large bid as a No. 12 seed as the WAC regular season champions. ODU hosted SMU in the second round of the tournament and defeated the visitors, 96-76.
ODU led 37-30 at halftime and pulled away late thanks to a 16-3 run. The Lady Monarchs won the battle on the glass, 50-34 and shot 50 percent from the field compared to a 40 percent clip by SMU. Hamchetou Maiga finished the game with 20 boards and 15 points.
The game also marked the return of Rhonda Rompola to Norfolk and the first time she coached against her former school. Rompola began her collegiate career at ODU and was on the 1979 and 1980 AIAW National Championship teams. She was the head coach of the Mustangs from 1991-2016.
