NORFOLK, Va. - The Old Dominion men’s basketball team will look to get off to a hot start in the Cayman Islands Classic this Sunday at 7:30 p.m. against Boston College. With a win, the Monarchs will go to .500 for the first time since the beginning of the season.
The game will have live stats and will be streamed on FloSports. Dennis Wolff and Andy Mashaw will be on the call for ESPN Radio 94.1.
This will be the first meeting between the two programs.
ABOUT ODU:
ODU is coming off back-to-back victories against UMES (73-71) and Randolph-Macon (71-55) holding a 2-3 record this season.
Devin Ceaser leads the team in scoring with 15.2 ppg. while shooting 44% from the field. Robert Davis Jr. leads the team in three-point shooting on 40% shooting from deep (15-37). Sean Durugordon and Caelum Swanton-Rodger are tied for first on the team in rebounding with 7.0 boards per game. Durugordon has grabbed 22 offensive rebounds, an average of 4.4 per game which ranks 10th in the NCAA. Swanton-Rodger is an active force on the defensive end with 13 blocks and three steals this season. The junior from Calgary, Alberta, Canada averages 2.4 blocks per game which ranks him 24th in the NCAA and his 13 blocks ranks 10th nationally.
Mike Jones took over as head coach of the Monarchs from long-time coach Jeff Jones who moved into a mentor role for ODU at the end of the 2023 season. For just the second time in program history, Old Dominion University has hired an alumnus to coach the men's basketball team. Jones played for the Monarchs from 1991-95 and was a part of two tournament championship teams, he returned to ODU after spending this past season as an assistant coach at Maryland.
ABOUT BC:
Boston College comes into this game sitting at 3-1 to start the season. The Eagles have recorded wins against The Citadel (69-60), Temple (72-69), and Loyola (Md.) (82-61). Their one loss came to VCU where the team lost by 25 points (80-55).
Guard Donald Hand Jr. leads BC in scoring (17.8 ppg) on 43% shooting from deep while averaging a team leading 9.5 rebounds per game. Chad Venning ranks second on the team with 12.5 ppg along with five steals and a team high seven blocks. Elijah Strong ranks third on the team with 10.8 ppg while averaging 5.3 rebounds per game.
UP NEXT:
ODU will play either Missouri State or High Point on Monday with tip-off scheduled for 5 p.m. or 7:30 p.m. based on consolation and championship bracket results. The start time for Tuesday’s game has yet to be determined.
