MADISON, Wisc. – The Old Dominion men's tennis team took to the road for its first dual match of the season and came away with an impressive 5-2 win at Wisconsin on Friday night.
"A very solid first away performance. I think you could see the away nerves for the first 10-15 minutes of singles. But then we settled in and played our games," said ODU Head Coach Dominik Mueller. "The two losses in a super breaker put a little asterik on today, but I think it will give us extra motivation to clean up some things on Sunday at Drake."
In doubles, the Monarchs took a win by the 33rd-ranked duo of Jakob Cadonau and Cosme Rolland De Ravel by a 6-3 count at No. 2 over Matthew Fullerton and Michael Minasyan to clinch the team point after Wisconsin forfeited at No. 3.
In singles, after a forfeit win by Cadonau at No. 6 for a 2-0 lead, the Monarchs clinched the victory with wins at No. 3 by Rolland De Ravel (6-2, 6-1) and No. 4 by Yanis Moundir (6-4, 6-1) to take a 4-0 lead. Connor van Schalkwyk finished the night with a 7-5, 6-3 win at No. 2 for a 5-0 ODU lead. Wisconsin won the final two matches in a third-set super tiebreaker for the 5-2 final.
ODU now heads to Des Moines, Iowa on Sunday for a noon start against Drake.
