Men's Tennis Sweeps Spring Opening Doubleheader

NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion men's tennis team began its 2024 spring season on Saturday with a pair of 7-0 wins at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center over Temple and Howard.
 
"A very mature start from our team today. They came out and took care of business," said ODU Head Coach Dominik Mueller. "Everybody competed and executed their game plans. I can't ask for a better first match day."
 
Against Temple, the Monarchs opened with doubles wins by the sixth-ranked duo of Codie van Schalkwyk and Connor van Schalkwyk at No. 1 (6-1) and Maxime Mareschal-Hay with Yanis Moundir (6-2) at No. 3 to take the team point.
 
Singles saw ODU win all matches in straight sets with Connor van Schalkwyk winning at No. 2 (6-1, 6-0) and Cosme Rolland De Ravel winning at No. 3 (6-0, 6-1) to get the Monarchs quickly to a 3-0 lead. Jakob Cadonau clinched the sweep taking a tough 7-6 (9-7), 6-3 win at No. 6 for the 7-0 victory.
 
Against Howard, the doubles point was won as ODU took victories in the top two slots of the lineup. Cadonau and Cosme Rolland De Ravel, ranked 33rd nationally, opened with a 6-2 win at No. 1, with Mareschal-Hay and Moundir clinching with a 6-4 win at No. 2. The Monarchs finished doubles with a Parker Collins-Flores and Aryan Saleh win at No. 3 by a 7-5 count.
 
Singles saw the Monarchs win all but one set. Mareschal-Hay started the run with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 5, while Moundir took a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 2 to lead 3-0. A rapid succession of wins by Collins-Flores (6-3, 6-1) at No. 6, Codie van Schalkwyk (6-0, 6-3) at No. 1 and Aryan Saleh at No. 3 (6-2, 6-3) pushed the advantage to 6-0.
 
Cadonau had his second clincher of the day with a 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-3) win at No. 4 to finish a second sweep for the Monarchs.
 
ODU (2-0) now hits the road for Madison, Wisconsin to take on Wisconsin on Friday night at 6:30 p.m.
