NORFOLK, Va. -- Old Dominion head women's tennis coach Dominic Manilla announced the signing of three players who join the team for the 2024 season.
"It is exciting to welcome our newest players to the team this January," said ODU Head Coach Dominic Manilla. "We have a great schedule and some young players looking to make a name for themselves."
Ulyana Romanova joins the Monarchs from Kazakhstan where she was ranked #322 as a junior player. She was a semifinalist in doubles at a WTA 15k event and has won three doubles titles in ITF juniors as well as one singles title.
Lidiia Rasskouskaia is from St. Petersburg, Russia and has won a pair of doubles titles in ITF juniors and one singles title. She has been a finalist twice in WTA 15k doubles events and won once.
Victoria Matasova is a transfer from VCU after playing last season for the Rams. The native of Malye, Kabany, Russia won 10 matches last year at No.3 singles and eight at No. 2 doubles. She was ranked 30th nationally to start the season in doubles last year. Prior to college she was ranked #181 in ITF junior singles and doubles.
The Monarchs open their 2024 schedule with a two-match swing in Florida starting on Sunday at FAU in Boca Raton at noon. On Tuesday, they will be in Tallahassee to face Florida State at 2:00 p.m.
This will be the fourth matchup between ODU and FAU with the Monarchs winning the previous three. The last meeting was in the 2021 Conference USA Semifinals with ODU winning 4-1.
Tuesday's match with the Seminoles will also be the fourth meeting, with Florida State leading 2-1. The Monarchs took a 4-1 win on February 19, 2023 at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center.
ODU returns four from the 2023 Sun Belt Conference Champions behind Sofia Johnson and Alexandra Viktorovitch. Johnson was 16-8 in singles mainly at No.2, while Viktorovitch was 19-8 and 9-0 in league action. The Monarchs finished 2023 with a 19-5 overall record and a perfect 10-0 in league play.
