NORFOLK, Va. – The two-time Sun Belt Conference champion Old Dominion women’s soccer team begins league play on Friday night when they host Coastal Carolina at 7 p.m. at the ODU Soccer Stadium.

The game will have live stats and be streamed on ESPN+.

In last year’s meeting at Coastal Carolina, ODU scored at the 68:09 mark in the second half and the Monarchs recorded their seventh clean sheet in eight matches for a 1-0 victory.

ODU starts league play after a 2-0 loss at sixth-ranked Auburn on Friday, September 13. The host Tigers got a goal in each half and outshot the Monarchs 13-6 on the night. Erin Jones made five saves in goal for ODU.

Coastal Carolina enters having defeated Davidson 3-1 on Sunday, September 15 at home. Tamlyn Parkes, Madison Micheletti and Olivia Goreteski each tallied a goal for the Chanticleers who gave up a goal in the final minute to end the potential shutout.

Both teams have played a pair of common opponents in UNC Wilmington and Auburn. ODU defeated UNC Wilmington (2-0) and lost to Auburn (2-0), while Coastal Carolina lost to UNC Wilmington (2-0) and Auburn (3-0).

ABOUT ODU

ODU leads the all-time series 3-1 with Coastal Carolina and has won both league matchups. The Monarchs have won three straight, all by shutout, over the Chanticleers. They won 4-0 on Oct. 9, 2022, in Norfolk and 1-0 on Sept. 15, 2023 in Conway, S.C.

Ashlynn Kulha has played all 90 minutes in each of the eight games thus far in 2024. Heading back to last season, she has played in 940 straight minutes with the final two games of 2023 going into double overtime.

Through eight matches, Rhea Kijowski leads the Monarchs with three goals and one assist for seven points. Katie Lutz has two goals for four points, while Yuliia Khrystiuk, Riley Mullen, Andrea Balcazar Algarin and Brooke Edwards have one goal and one assist each. Kijowski has taken 26 shots and 13 on goal to lead the team.

In goal, Emily Bredek and Erin Jones have split time in the net. Bredek has recorded 16 saves in five games with a save percentage of .842 and a goals against average of 0.74 in 365 minutes. Jones has made 13 saves in five games with a .765 save percentage and a goals against average of 1.01 in 354 minutes.

The first women’s soccer RPI rankings were released on Monday and ODU starts off at 74th in the rankings. Last season, the Sun Belt Conference ended with seven teams ranked in the top 75 of the RPI.

Following the win at W&M, Bredek was named Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Week. She had nine saves in the two ODU wins against W&M and UNCW.  The nine saves against W&M were a career high for her and the clean sheet was her first of the season and 15th of her career.

Bredek and Kulha were named to the preseason All-Sun Belt Conference team, while the Monarchs were picked to finish first by the league coaches. Click here for that release.

ABOUT COASTAL CAROLINA

Parkes leads the team in scoring with four goals and one assist for nine points, while Eleanor Ashton is next with two points and one assist for five points. Stella Lawson leads Coastal Carolina in assists with two.

In the net, Vivienne Carr has logged the most minutes with 705 in nine matches. She has made 23 saves, with a save percentage of .742 and a goals against average of 1.02.

Coastal Carolina is 4-1-0 this month with wins over UAB (1-0), Belmont (1-0), UNC Greensboro (2-0) and Davidson (3-1). Their only loss was to Lipscomb (3-0).
