Men’s Tennis Blanks Georgia State 4-0 In Sun Belt Conference Semifinals
The 56th-ranked Old Dominion men’s tennis team advanced to the Sun Belt Conference Tournament title match on Saturday with a 4-0 win over Georgia State.
ROME, GA. – The 56th-ranked Old Dominion men’s tennis team advanced to the Sun Belt Conference Tournament title match on Saturday with a 4-0 win over Georgia State.
With the win, the Monarchs advance to Sunday’s 1 p.m. final against top-seeded Georgia Southern. The Eagles defeated ODU 4-3 on March 24 in Statesboro, Georgia.
“We set the tone with doubles today. Our teams came out firing. Georgia State made a big push and threw everything at us, but we were able to contain that and finish them off for a clean victory at the end of the day,” said ODU Head Coach Dominik Mueller.
In doubles, the Monarchs took the team point with wins at the top two spots. Connor van Schalkwyk and Jakob Cadonau opened with a 6-2 win at No. 1 over Maxwell Weir and Gabriele Datei. The clincher in doubles was by Cosme Rolland de Ravel and Codie van Schalkwyk at No. 2 with a 6-1 win over Naufal Kamaruzzaman and Diogo Morais.
In singles, the Monarchs got going with a win by Connor van Schalkwyk over Edward Tymes at No. 2 by a 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) count for a 2-0 lead. Codie van Schalkwyk followed suit with a 6-1, 1-6, 6-1 win over Datei at No. 4 to push the lead to 3-0. Rolland de Ravel finished the match with a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Baran Soyler at No. 1.
“Getting back to the championship match was our goal all season. We only have two players back that played in it last year, so I think that speaks for itself how nice our run has been so far. But we want to take it all tomorrow,” Mueller added.
