ROME, Ga. – The 56th-ranked Old Dominion men's tennis team started play on Friday afternoon in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament with a 4-0 win over Southern Miss.
Second-seeded ODU (18-7) now advances to face third-seeded Georgia State (11-12) Saturday afternoon in a 2 p.m. semifinal. The Panthers defeated sixth-seeded Troy 4-1 in the other 2 p.m. semifinal Friday.
In doubles, the Monarchs took the team point with wins at the two and three spots. Yanis Moundir and Maxime Mareschal-Hay got the first doubles win with a 6-3 decision over Shamirul Shahril and Pasawee Reansuwong at No. 3. A couple minutes later, the Monarchs got the team point in a 6-2 win at No. 2 by Cosme Rolland de Ravel and Codie van Schalkwyk over Saheb Sodhi and Olimjon Nabiev.
Aryan Saleh got the Monarchs on the board in singles with a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 6 over Saheb Sodhi to lead 2-0. Mareschal-Hay gave ODU a 3-0 lead following a 6-4, 6-2 win over Olle Noltrop at No. 5. Rolland de Ravel got the clincher at No. 1 with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Dakotah Bobo to put the Monarchs into the semifinals.
"A very professional way to start the tournament. We took care of business and that's all it matters in the post season," said ODU Head Coach Dominik Mueller.
