SNOW HILL, N.C. – Old Dominion men's golf earned its fourth Top 5 finish of 2023-24 and second in a row as the Monarchs placed third at the Cutter Creek Intercollegiate on Sunday.
ODU was in a three-way tie for seventh at eight-over par 296 following Friday's opening round. The team then jumped up to third with a nine-under 279 on Saturday and added a final round of 280 for a 54-hole total of 855 (-9). East Carolina and Elon, who co-hosted the Intercollegiate, finished in first and second place, respectively. The Pirates captured the team title with a 24-under 840, and the Phoenix was two strokes behind them at 842. The Monarchs edged Davidson by two strokes as the Wildcats came in fourth place at 857 (-7).
ECU's Lucas Augustsson was the individual medalist after carding a nine-under 207, teammate Philip Linberg Bondestad was the runner-up with a 208, and Elon's Jack Wieler posted a 209 to end up in third.
Jakob Chicoyne was the top finisher for the Monarchs, tying for seventh at four-under 212. The senior from Calgary, Alberta, Canada hit a four-over 76 in the first round, but made four birdies and 14 pars for a 68 in round two. On Sunday, Chicoyne collected another four birdies and eagled the par-5 fifth hole to offset bogeys on Holes 10 and 14. Next for ODU was ODU was Kaijun Ma, who tied for 10th at three-under 213. The Macau, China native also turned in a 68 the second round thanks to seven birdies, including four on the front nine. He shot a two-under 70 for his final lap around the course, led the field in par-3 scoring with a 2.75 average, and was tied for the tournament lead in birdies made with 15.
Jakob Henriksson was the other Monarch with a round in the 60s, a 69 on the final day of competition. He posted an even score of 216 to tie for 21st. Cullen Campbell was two strokes back of Henriksson and tied for 29th with a 218, Jacob Gunther tied for 65th with a 226, and Kazuki Yamauchi's 230 tied him for 84th.
"Another nice tournament for the guys," said ODU Head Coach Murray Rudisill. "We beat a number of teams that were ranked ahead of us. We trending in the right direction and hope to have another great showing next weekend."
The Monarchs have one more tournament in the regular season, Appalachian State's Irish Creek Collegiate on April 8-9 in Kannapolis, North Carolina.
