Vasean Allette with a season-highi 30 points at W&M

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Homestanding William & Mary hit 15 3-pointers and held off an Old Dominion charge to take an 84-79 victory on Wednesday night.
 
"William & Mary truly didn't care who had the hot hand and played together tonight," said ODU head coach Jeff Jones. "They exposed our defense tonight and until our guys understand and do the things that good teams do defensively, we will continue to struggle.
 
ODU started off quickly with a Vasean Allette jumper and a Tyrone Williams dunk for a 4-0 lead in the first 53 seconds. The Monarchs kept the advantage at 15-13 after a jumper by Allette at 13:54 of the half.
 
W&M (4-6) went on a 12-2 run over the next five minutes as a Trey Moss jumper with 8:41 left gave the Tribe a 25-17 advantage.
 
The Monarchs responded with a three-point barrage as Bryce Baker drained two in a row, followed by an Imo Essien 3-ball and a jumper by Allette as ODU took a 28-27 lead with 6:18 on the clock. That run grew to 18-3 as R.J. Blakney had a dunk to lead 35-28 with 2:20 left.
 
Charlie Williams and Allette traded three-pointers but a Chase Lowe layup just beating the halftime horn brought the Tribe to 41-36 at the break.
 
In the second half Dericko Williams hit a baseline jumper to keep ODU up 51-46 at the 13:54 mark. The Tribe answered with nine straight points as two free throws by Moss put them up 55-51 with 11:40 left. That was part of an 21-7 run as Caleb Dorsey drained consecutive triples to lead 67-58 with 7:37 on the clock.
 
ODU had a couple runs left as Allette hit a layup at 3:27 to bring the Monarchs to 73-72. Allette, who had a season-high 30 points on the night, scored eight straight points as a three-point play with 80 seconds left gave ODU one last shot down 79-78.
 
The Tribe closed it out with four free throws and a Moss jumper for the 84-78 final.
 
On the night, ODU was 30-of-59 from the floor (50.8%), 11-of-27 from 3-point range (40.7%) and 8-of-13 from the foul line (61.5%). Allette also had a season high seven rebounds, while Chaunce Jenkins had 12 points and four assists and Williams added 10 points.
 
W&M was 25-of-47 from the floor (53.2%), 15-of-31 from 3-point range (48.4%) and 19-of-27 from the line (70.4%). Williams paced four in double figures with 23 points, while Moss added 20.
 
ODU returns home on Saturday night for a White Out hosting 18th-ranked James Madison at 7:00 p.m.
