SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- Codie van Schalkwyk and Connor van Schalkwyk kept their ITA Fall Nationals run going on Saturday as they scored a 7-6 (7-2), 6-4 win over Pedro Vives Marcos and Sebastian Gorzny of TCU in the semifinals at the Barnes Tennis Center.
With the win, the brothers advance to face third-seeded Ozan Baris and Max Sheldon of Michigan State on Sunday afternoon at 2 pm ET. This marks the first time under head coach Dominik Mueller that a duo has advanced to the ITA Fall National Championships.
In the first set, the tiebreaker saw the van Schalkwyks jump out to a 4-1 lead en route to the 7-2 tie-breaker win and first set victory 7-6. After splitting the first six games of the second set, the van Schalkwyks put together a pair of games won to move up 5-3 en route to the 6-4 final set win.
"A great win for Connor and Codie today in such a big match in beating the 13th-ranked team in the country from TCU," said ODU Associate Head Coach Othmane Lalami. "To be honest, that wasn't our best performance especially on our serves, but we found a way and that's what great teams do. Can't wait for tomorrow, we earned our way into the national championship match."
