NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion men's tennis team learned late Thursday that a second doubles team earned an at-large spot to the ITA Fall Nationals in San Diego, California.
Following their strong showing at the ITA Atlantic Regionals making the semifinals, Codie van Schalkwyk and Connor van Schalkwyk were awarded an at-large bid to the nationals. In California, they'll join Jakob Cadonau and Cosme Rolland De Ravel who were the winners of the regional and earned an automatic bid.
"I'm so glad for Codie and Connor to get this chance after falling short in a super breaker against Cosme and Jakob to qualify in the first place," said head coach Dominik Mueller. "What an accomplishment for our program to have two doubles teams in the field of 32 and earning an at-large spot and one automatic bid. We are excited to make some noise at fall nationals.
The van Schalkwyks started regional play defeating the fourth-seeded duo of Bill Duo and Alexandre LeBlanc of William & Mary 8-3 in their first match and then defeated Oscar Bain and Adamantios Stavrakas of Bucknell 8-4 to make the quarterfinals. In that round they defeated German Samofalov and Romain Gales of VCU 8-7 (7-2). The semis saw them drop a tough three-set match to Cadonau and Rolland De Ravel with the third set going to a 10-5 tie-breaker.
The nationals will begin on November 1 and run through November 5 at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego. Information on the tournament can be found here.
