BURLINGTON, N.C. – The Old Dominion men's golf team turned in three rounds of even 284 to finish tied for ninth at the Eighth Annual Phoenix Invitational on Tuesday afternoon. Elon hosted the Invitational at Alamance Country Club.
The Monarchs combined for a 54-hole total of 852 and were tied with Francis Marion on the team leaderboard. The host Phoenix defended their home course, winning with a 31-under par 821. Western Carolina claimed second place with a final score of 831 (-21), and Presbyterian and Radford shared third place with a pair of 838s (-14).
"Tee to green, the guys looked fantastic," said associate head coach Barry Marple. "They were much improved from last week. We just couldn't buy a putt."
Presbyterian's Jack Wofford was the individual champion with a 14-under 199, App State's Addison Beam was the runner-up and three strokes behind Wofford with an 11-under 202, and Elon's Garrett Risner shot a nine-under 204 to come in third.
Jacob Gunther was the top finisher for ODU, tying for 19th at 210 (-3). The junior from Stockholm, Sweden had a solid first day, turning in a one-under 70 on Monday morning and a 69 that afternoon. He finished the tournament with an even 71 on Tuesday. Kazuki Yamauchi was next, his one-over 214 tying him for 34th. Kaijun Ma was one stroke behind Yamauchi and tied for 42nd at 215, Jakob Henriksson recorded a score of 218 to tie for 52nd, and Jakob Chicoyne ended up in a tie for 56th at 219.
Gunther averaged a 4.33 for par-5s and made an eagle on the par-5 17th hole in his first round. Chicoyne recorded the team's other eagle, making his second shot on the par-4 ninth hole on Tuesday. Gunther and Henriksson led the Monarchs with 11 birdies each, and Yamauchi had the team high in pars with 39.
The Monarchs will wrap up their fall schedule next week when they host the ODU/OBX Intercollegiate at Kilmarlic Golf Club in Powells Point, North Carolina. The three-day tournament will run from Sunday through Tuesday, Oct. 22-24.
