NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion women's soccer team dropped its home Sun Belt Conference opener on Thursday night 1-0 to the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns at the ODU Soccer Stadium.

"We were slow to get out the gates tonight, but I have to say this was a lot due to Louisiana as they started strong," said ODU Head Coach Angie Hind.

Louisiana scored in the 53rd minute as Mary Mueth sent a pass into Alyssa Abbott who found Tatum Beck as she put it in the net for the 1-0 lead.

In the first half, Louisiana (4-3-2, 1-1-0) opened controlling the action with the ODU (6-1-2, 1-1-0) back line holding strong and keeping the Ragin' Cajuns out of the net. ODU closed the half on a rush with several opportunities in the final eight minutes and eventual shot advantage of 10-4, but at half it was 0-0.

Following the Louisiana goal in the second half, ODU turned the pressure up and peppered the net to an 11-4 shot advantage in the second half but couldn't find the equalizer. The Monarchs had a pair of chances in the final two minutes but shots by Andrea Balcazar Algarin and Megan Watts just missed.

"Despite the chances we had we couldn't hit the net and that was a big issue for us tonight. We had to convert some of these chances," Hind said. "When you don't, you have to be perfect at the back and that's hard to do throughout. They scored a fantastic breakaway goal and from then on we were chasing the clock. "

Old Dominion now hits the road to take on Georgia Southern at 1 p.m. Sunday in Statesboro, Georgia. They'll return home on Saturday, Sept. 30 for Senior Day against Southern Miss at 2 p.m.
