NORFOLK, Va. – Old Dominion volleyball has its first road trip of the season as the Monarchs travel to Annapolis, Maryland to compete in Navy's Kristen Dickmann Invitational.
ODU and Maryland open the tournament with a 4 p.m. match on Friday. The Monarchs will then play Utah Valley at 11 a.m. on Saturday, followed by a 7 p.m. match against Navy that evening. Live stats will be available for all three matches, and Saturday's contest versus the Midshipmen will be streamed on ESPN+.
This year's tournament marks the 12th edition of the Invitational, which is named for the Navy volleyball player who passed away in her sleep during exam week at the end of her freshman year in May 2008. Navy will honor Kristen during the tournament and her family will be in attendance.
Fan Information
Fans are not allowed to drive onto the US Naval Academy unless they have a Department of Defense ID card. Those without a DoD card must park outside the USNA and either:
1) Walk through the visitor's center, located at the corner of King George Street and Randall Street in downtown Annapolis (52 King George St., Annapolis, MD 21402), OR
2) Ride the shuttle bus, which will begin running one hour before the start of the first match of the day and ends four hours after the start of the last match. The bus will depart from and return to Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium (550 Taylor Ave., Annapolis, MD 21401), near the Blue Angel jet located on the blue (west) side of the stadium. There is a $10 per vehicle charge to park, but the shuttle is free.
Fans ages 18 and older must have and be prepared to display a government issued photo ID (driver's license) and those ages 17 and under will not be allowed through unless they are accompanied by an adult.
There is no public WiFi on the USNA.
About ODU
The Monarchs are off to a 3-0 start to the season following a 3-1 win over William & Mary on Tuesday. Myah Conway scored 17 kills and Bryanna Jones followed with 14 to lead the offensive effort, Teresa Atilano turned in a 41-assist, 11-dig double-double, and ODU out blocked the Tribe, 23-16. The Monarchs trailed 16-7 in the fourth set, but rallied for a 27-25 decision to take the set and the match.
Jones leads the team with 43 kills and 50.5 points, while Conway is not far behind her with 39 kills and 44 points. Atilano is up to 115 assists and Kira Smith has served a team-high seven aces. Defensively, Kate Kilpatrick owns 42 digs and Atilano follows her with 25. At the net, Bailey Burgess enters this weekend with 10 blocks. Atilano, Conway and LeeAnne Lowery have recorded nine blocks each, and Olivia De Jesus has eight.
About Maryland
The Terrapins (2-1) played in The Canes Classic last weekend in Coral Gables, Florida. Maryland defeated FIU in four sets on Friday morning, but fell 3-1 to host Miami, who was receiving votes in the AVCA preseason rankings, that night. The Terps then bounced back with a 3-0 win over Lamar on Saturday.
Leading the Maryland attack are Sam Csire (29 kills), Samantha Schnitta (26 kills), Eva Rohrback (23 kills) and Laila Ivey (22 kills). Setter Sydney Dowler is up to 105 assists and Lilly Gunter has the team highs in aces (6) and digs (44). Rohrmack is the Terps' top blocker with 12 and Dowler is second on the team with eight.
The Terps were picked to finish ninth in the Big Ten Preseason Poll, as voted on by the conference's 14 head coaches. Friday's match will mark the first meeting between ODU and Maryland.
About Utah Valley
The Wolverines (1-2) hosted NC State and Utah (RV) for the Utah Valley Invitational last Friday and Saturday. UVU opened its tournament with a 3-1 loss to the Wolfpack, but bounced back with a 3-1 win over the Utes. In a rematch with NC State on Saturday, Utah Valley captured the first two sets 25-22 and 25-20, but the Wolfpack kept the match going with a 25-19 tally in the third set and a 25-17 decision in the fourth. The deciding set was tied at 14-14, but NCSU earned the next two points. Lani Matavao was named the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Libero of the Week after earning a spot on the Invitational's All-Tournament Team.
UVU's offense is led by Avery Shewell (41 kills) and Tori Ellis (34 kills). Setters Abbie Medeiros and Evalyn Chism have combined for 113 assists and have served four aces each, while Shewell is just ahead of them with five aces. On defense, Caleigh Vagana owns a team-best 22 blocks, Shewell is next with 12, and Matavao has 63 digs.
The Wolverines were picked to finish fourth in the WAC's Preseason Coaches' Poll and Ellis was named to the Preseason All-Conference Team. Utah Valley and ODU are meeting for the first time this weekend.
About Navy
The Midshipmen (2-1) were at the UAlbany Invitational last weekend, where they defeated Syracuse in straight sets and fell 3-1 to UCF on Friday. Navy capped off its trip to the Empire State with a 3-0 win over the host Great Danes. Jamie Llewellyn and Anna Klemeyer represented the Mids on the All-Tournament Team, and Llewellyn added Naval Academy Athletic Association (NAAA) Athlete of the Week honors on Tuesday.
Twin sisters Jamie and Jordan Llewellyn lead Navy with 38 and 28 kills, respectively, and Klemeyer is next with 21. Averi Miller is the team's primary setter with 95 assists and Hannah Hoover and Jamie Llewellyn have combined for 11 services aces. Hoover owns a team-high 38 digs while Klemeyer and Maggie Bodman are the go-to options at the net with 13 blocks between the two of them.
Miller was named the Patriot League's Preseason Setter of the Year and was joined on the Preseason All-League Team by Bodman and Jordan Llewellyn. The Mids were picked to finish third in a vote by the League's head coaches and sports information directors.
Navy and ODU have met once before, a 3-2 win for the Monarchs in their 2022 home opener. The first match of the Quest for the Crown tournament, ODU trailed two sets to one, but forced a fifth set with a 25-16 tally in the fourth set. With the decisive set tied at 14-14, a Navy service error and a kill by Burgess sealed the victory for ODU.
