Monarchs Finish Third at Cutter Creek

SNOW HILL, N.C. – A final round of eight-under par 280 helped Old Dominion men's golf move up four spots in the team standings as the Monarchs finished third at the 2023 Cutter Creek Intercollegiate.

East Carolina and Elon co-hosted the three-day tournament on the par-72, 7,280-yard course at Cutter Creek Golf Club.

The Monarchs entered the day in seventh place after posting an 11-over 299 on Friday and a 16-over 304 on Saturday. ODU ended up with a 54-hole total of 883 (+19) for its best finish as a team for 2022-23.

ECU won the team title with a four-over 868 and Jacksonville State was one stroke back and the runner up at 869. ECU's Lucas Augustsson earned individual medalist honors with a three-under 213 and Radford's Bryce Corbett came in second with a two-under 214.

"We were very pleased with our play today," said head coach Murray Rudisill. "We made a big jump in the standings, and it was great to have four good scores. It just showed us that we are capable of becoming a very good team. Hopefully this will carry over for the final two tournaments."

Freshman Aleksander Bjorge turned in ODU's best round of the tournament, a four-under 68 on his final trip around the course. The Alesund, Norway native eagled the par-5 second hole and added four birdies to tie for 27th with a nine-over 225.

Jakob Chicoyne was the top finisher for the Monarchs, tying for ninth with a final tally of 220 (+4). He recorded a pair of 74s for his first two rounds and added an even 72 for the final 18 holes. Kazuki Yamauchi was next, his 10-over 226 tying him for 34th. Jakob Henriksson and Kaijun Ma both shot two-under 70s on Sunday. Henriksson tied for 38th with a 227 (+11) and Ma was right behind him and tied for 41st at 228 (+12). Jacob Gunther rounded out the scores for the Monarchs, tying for 43rd with a 229 (+13).

Chicoyne tied for fourth with an even 4.00 average in par-4 scoring. Henriksson had ODU's other eagle, a three on the par-5 fifth hole in Friday's opening round. Chicoyne and Ma led the team with nine birdies each while Yamauchi and Bjorge made a team-high 35 putts for par each.

ODU will travel to Tunica, Mississippi on April 17-18 to play in the Tunica National Intercollegiate, its final tournament of the regular season. The 2023 Sun Belt Conference Championship will be held at Annandale Golf Club on April 24-27 in Madison, Mississippi.
