SAN ANTONIO - The 54th-ranked Old Dominion Monarchs rallied from a 3-1 deficit on Thursday afternoon but fell short of a comeback win as they dropped a 4-3 decision to 42nd-ranked UTSA in a non-conference matchup to close out their Spring Break trip.
In doubles, the Monarchs got a win at the top as Jakob Cadonau and Luca Maldoner won 6-3 at line one. The Roadrunners earned wins at the other two spots to take the team point.
Singles, saw UTSA (10-4) take a 2-0 lead after a win at line six. ODU got on the board as Cadonau earned a 7-5, 6-0 win at line five over Garrett Skelly. The Roadrunners responded with a win at line three, but ODU answered with a 7-6, 6-3 Comse Rolland De Ravel victory at line four to trail 3-2.
ODU (8-7) evened the match at the top where Younes Lalami took a hard fought 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 win over Tiago Torres to even the match at 3-3. The deciding match went to a 7-5 third set that was in favor of the hosts in a match that was nearly two and a half hours.
"I'll sound like a broken record, but it was the same story line we have had too many times this season. We struggled in doubles, put ourselves in a big hole and fought back to make it a close match," said ODU Head Coach Dominik Mueller. "At the end, UTSA played higher risk tennis at the end of doubles and singles and were rewarded for it. All the credit to them."
The Monarchs start Sun Belt Conference play March 18 at South Alabama and then March 19 at Troy.
