Monarchs Conclude Regular Season With Road Games at Marshall and Coastal Carolina

NORFOLK, Va. – Old Dominion women's basketball hits the road for its final two games of the regular season. The Monarchs will play at Marshall on Wednesday and at Coastal Carolina this Friday, with both games scheduled for 6 p.m. starts.
 
Both games will be streamed on ESPN+ and Matthew Hatfield will also call them on the ODU Sports Radio Network. Fans will also be able to follow along with live stats.
 
The Series
ODU hosted Marshall at Chartway Arena on Jan. 14 and beat the Thundering Herd, 63-56. The visitors held a 49-47 lead going into the final quarter, but the Monarchs went up 53-49 at the 6:20 mark and never trailed again. Amari Young led the way with a 17-point, 13-rebound double-double. Also scoring in double figures were Kaye Clark with 16 points and Jatyjia Jones with 12. With the victory, ODU improved to 12-6 in the all-time series.
 
The Monarchs also defeated the Chanticleers, 78-64 when they came to Norfolk on Jan. 28. ODU jumped out to an early double-digit lead, led by as many as 18, and held off a late Coastal push. Young finished with 17 points and eight boards, Kaylen Nelson followed with 11 points, and Taleah Washington and Brianna Jackson chipped in eight points each. It marked the first-ever meeting with Coastal.
 
About ODU
The Monarchs (19-10, 11-5 Sun Belt) earned a 71-65 win over App State last Thursday, but lost in overtime to visiting James Madison, 73-68 on Saturday. Young scored a jumper with one second left in regulation to knot the game at 61-61, and ODU went up 67-61 with 3:29 to go in the extra period. However, the Monarchs went cold and the Dukes closed out the game with eight unanswered points. Young scored a season-high 23 points with 15 rebounds in the loss.
 
ODU's offense is led by Young's 11.4 points and Makayla Dicken's 10.5 points per game. Clark is close to averaging double figures with 9.2 ppg, and Jordan McLaughlin is next at 8.2 ppg. Dickens ranks second in the league with 163 three-point field goal attempts and is also third with 55 made threes. Clark is first in the Sun Belt and 15th nationally with 74 steals, and her 2.55 steals per game lead the conference and rank 31st in the country. Young leads ODU on the glass with 8.4 rebounds per outing, and McLaughlin is one assist shy of 100. Four Monarchs have recorded double-digit blocks, led by Jada Duckett with 17.
 
As of Feb. 20, ODU ranks third in the conference in steals per game (9.7), turnover margin (3.52) and turnovers forced per game (19.76). The Monarchs enter the week averaging 65.4 ppg with a +4.2 scoring margin and are shooting .394 (708-for-1795) from the field, .284 (152-for-535) from beyond the arc, and .626 (328-for-524) at the free-throw line. ODU is currently tied for third in the conference standings with Texas State and Southern Miss.
  
About Marshall
The Thundering Herd (15-12, 8-8) is on a three-game skid having lost to Texas State 64-60 on Feb. 11, to Georgia Southern 63-61 on Feb. 16, and to Georgia State 55-54 on Feb. 18. Marshall currently sits in eighth place in the league standings.
 
Marshall's two primary scorers are Roshala Scott (17.4 ppg) and Abby Beeman (13.5 ppg), though Mahogany Matthews is close to double digits with a 9.1 average. Scott is also the team leader in made threes with 43. Beeman is close behind with 39 long balls and Sydni Scott (5.5 ppg) has knocked down 35 shots from distance. Beeman has the team-highs in both rebounds (167; 6.2 rpg) and steals (49), while Matthews' 55 blocks are the second-most in the Sun Belt.
 
The team averages 64.4 points with a +4.6 scoring margin. As a team, the Herd is shooting .403 (645-for-1602) from the floor, .296 (195-for-659) from long range, and .650 (253-for-389) at the charity stripe.
 
About Coastal Carolina
The Chanticleers (12-15, 7-9) find themselves in ninth place after splitting their games last week. Coastal won 99-97 at Troy on Thursday, but dropped its game at Georgia Southern 75-66 on Saturday. 
 
CCU's offense is paced by three players averaging double figures: Aja Blount (16.7 ppg), Deaja Richardson (13.2. ppg) and Arin Freeman (10.2 ppg). Richardson, Miriam Recarte (7.1 ppg) and Anaya Barnety can all shoot the three-ball with a combined 139 makes from distance between the three of them. Blount is the top rebounder with 8.2 boards each outing, Freeman is the leader in steals with 48, and Recarte owns 24 blocks.
 
Coastal comes into the final week of the regular season averaging 70.1 points and has outscored opponents by a narrow +1.4 margin. The Chanticleers are shooting .413 (652-for-1580) from the field, including .338 (195-for-577) from the perimeter, and .743 (393-for-529) at the line. CCU ranks second in the Sun Belt in free throw percentage, three point percentage and three pointers per game (7.2).
