Men's Tennis Sweeps Opening Day Doubleheader
Pair of 4-3 Wins Lead Monarchs to 2-0 start

NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion men's tennis team hosted a pair of matches on Sunday to start their 2023 spring season and came out with two 4-3 wins over Presbyterian and Georgetown at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center.

"It was a perfect doubleheader to start the season. Both opponents were high quality teams that pushed us early in the year," said ODU Head Coach Dominik Mueller. "Everybody got playing time and this will help us early in the schedule. Getting a ranked doubles win in the Presbyterian match was also very nice."

In the opener against Presbyterian, the Monarchs captured all three doubles matches to claim the team point. Highlighted at number one where the 54th ranked duo of Younes Lalami and Brandon Perez earned their second top 25 win of the 2022-23 season defeating the 22nd ranked tandem of Dusan Milanovic and Max Benson 6-4.

In singles against the Blue Hose, ODU got victories at the three, five and six spots to clinch the win. At three, Codie van Schalkwyk defeated Sebastian Dominiguez 6-1, 6-0. The five spot saw Jakob Cadonau take a 6-1, 6-3 win over Loup Alleno, while at six Nicola Vidal got the clincher with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Teo Cariov.

The nightcap saw the Monarchs tangle with Georgetown and ODU started in a hole after losing the doubles point. ODU got a win at the three spot with Yanis Moundir and Cosme Rolland De Ravel winning 6-1.

The Monarchs responded in singles with wins at the one, two, four and five spots to take the dual. Lalami won at number one over Kieran Foster 6-2, 6-4, while van Schalkwyk got his second of the day taking a 6-3, 6-3 win over Jake Fellows at two. Cadonau also earned his second win of the day with a 6-4, 6-4 win at four over Zamaan Moledina and Moundir earned the clincher at five with a 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 win over Adhvyte Sharma.
