NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion men's tennis team will begin their 2023 spring season this weekend with a pair of matches on Sunday at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center.
At 10 a.m., the Monarchs will entertain Presbyterian, while at 2 p.m., they'll face Georgetown.
The Monarchs return the top three in wins from 2021-22 season with Luca Maldoner recording 11 singles wins last year leading the batch. Younes Lalami and Codie van Schalkwyk had 10 wins in the spring last season.
In the fall Younes Lalami finished ranked 91st in singles with a 7-3 record, while the doubles duo of Brandon Perez and Younes Lalami were ranked 54th also with a 7-3 record. That duo advanced to the ITA Fall Nationals.
Old Dominion has a stellar home schedule with Virginia Tech, Auburn, Wisconsin and VCU coming to the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center. The Monarchs head to Philadelphia next weekend for a pair of matches at Penn and Drexel on January 21.
Quoting ODU Head Coach Dominik Mueller
We are excited to get the season finally started. Our guys worked hard all fall and this week for this and I think our fans will see that. Both teams are strong so we will be challenged right out of the gate.
Presbyterian is just like us, with a ranked singles player and a ranked doubles team. They have won the Big South a couple times lately and are a very well coached and deep team.
Georgetown is a team we saw at regionals and they had a strong showing there. I think they will be one of the better teams in the Big East this year.
