CHARLESTON, S.C. – Ben Stanley had a double-double of 20 points and 10 rebounds to lead three in double figures on Sunday as the Old Dominion men's basketball team dropped a 66-61 decision to Davidson in the final day of the Shriners Children's Charleston Classic.
ODU (3-3) jumped out to a 12-7 lead at the 15:38 mark on a Stanley jumper, but Davidson answered with a 20-5 blast to take a 27-17 lead with 5:35 left on a putback by David Skogman. The Wildcats kept that advantage through the end of the half taking a 32-23 lead into the locker room following a free throw by Mekhi Long with 26 seconds left.
The second half saw each team trade off runs as Davidson (5-1) pushed the advantage to 11 after a Skogman layup for a 40-29 lead with 15:40 left. Old Dominion responded to that run with a 16-6 spurt to trim the deficit to 46-45 after a Faizon Fields layup at the 8:51 mark.
Davidson pushed the lead back to double digits on the strength of an 11-2 run following a pair of Sam Mennenga free throws that gave the Wildcats a 57-47 lead with 2:02 left. ODU had one last run trimming the deficit to 64-61 following a Chaunce Jenkins dunk with six seconds left. A Mennenga dunk gave Davidson its final margin.
"A tale of two halves today, we had better ball movement in the second half and made some good runs. This tournament will help us down the road," said ODU head coach Jeff Jones.
Jenkins added 11 points and five assists, while Tyreek Scott-Grayson added 10 for ODU. Joining Stanley in double figures rebounding was Long with 10. Mennenga was the leading scorer for Davidson with 23 points and Foster Loyer added 22.
Old Dominion returns home to face East Carolina on November 26 at 7 p.m. inside Chartway Arena.
