CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Old Dominion men's tennis team participated in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Atlantic Regionals hosted by the University of Virginia this weekend and came out with a few good results.
Highlighting the list was a run to the semifinals of the gold division in doubles by Younes Lalami and Brandon Perez. The duo had wins over Liberty (8-3) and Va. Tech (8-6), before knocking off the ninth-ranked duo in the country of Bar Botzer and Chris Rodesch from Virginia 8-7 (12-10). Their run ended in another tiebreaker with a semifinal loss to Ryan Fishback and Alberto Oriso of Virginia Tech 8-7 (7-5).
In singles, Codie van Schalkwyk went 3-0 in the silver singles to earn a spot in the gold bracket. He recorded wins over Bucknell (6-3, 6-3), Virginia (6-2, 6-1) and Temple (6-4, 6-0) to earn a spot in the gold division. His first match there was against the top seed from Virginia and he fell 6-4, 6-3.
Jakob Cadonau was one round from advancing to the gold bracket after wins over Navy (6-3, 6-2) and Virginia Tech (6-2, 6-3) before falling to William & Mary 7-6 (3), 4-6, 6-1.
Overall, we had a very solid weekend in Charlottesville. Our new format with three play-in draws generated competitive matches from the first match on and these are the type of matches we needed in the fall," said head coach Dominik Mueller.
The Monarchs will close out the fall season at Liberty Hidden Duals on November 4-6.
