Women’s Golf Finishes Second Round of Chattanooga Classic

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Senior Jana Melichova of the Old Dominion women's golf team bettered her score by six strokes on Monday, carding a 2-under-par score of 70 to move just outside the top-10, and the Monarchs remained in the hunt for a top-five team finish following the second round of the Chattanooga Classic at the par-72, 6,234-yard Council Fire Golf Club.
 
"We were really close to a great day today," head coach Mallory Kane said. "We had three good scores and just needed one more to complete the day. That's golf. We are excited to finish strong tomorrow. This is a strong team, and they are showing that more and more this spring."
 
Melichova balanced five birdies against three bogeys on Monday to bounce back from a 76 in the opening round. Monday's 70 is her ninth round under par this season, and it puts the native of Pikovice, Czech Republic in a tie for 11th place at 2-over 146.
 
Federica Torre also had a turnaround performance on Monday, carding an even-par 72. Torre was 2-over on the front nine and 2-under on the back nine with two birdies and two bogeys apiece. The senior from Ronco Scrivia, Italy is tied for 18th at 148 (+4) and shares the event lead with 29 total pars.
 
Pilar Muguruza put up four more birdies in a 3-over 75 in the second round and is tied for 23rd at 149 (+5). Muguruza has excelled on the course's par-4 holes, finishing them in 4-under par.
 
Elsie Verhoeven and Leah Onosato rounded out the Monarchs with scores of 82 and 85, respectively.
 
Old Dominion posted a team score of 11-over 299 and is tied for seventh with Colorado State at 25-over 601. The Monarchs are just seven shots behind fifth-place South Florida. ODU's 24 combined birdies are tied for the fourth-most in the field.
 
UTSA put up the best score of the tournament so far with a 9-under 279 on Monday to vault atop the team leaderboard at even-par 576. North Florida is two shots behind in second place, and both Yale and Central Arkansas are tied for third at 15-over.
 
The Roadrunner's Hannah Holzmann matched the round of the tournament with a 67 on Monday to rise five spots into first place at 5-under 139. Melanie Green of South Florida and Ana Gonzalez of UTSA are in a two-way tie for third just one stroke back.

Competing as an individual at the Kingsmill Intercollegiate in Williamsburg, Virginia, Sarah Busey shot 79-82—161 and is tied for 41st going into tomorrow's final round.
 
The Chattanooga Classic concludes tomorrow with the third round. ODU will tee off between 9:20 a.m. and 10 a.m. alongside South Florida, East Carolina and Colorado State.
