MEN'S TENNIS HOLDS OFF PENN STATE FOR 5-2 SEASON OPENING WIN
NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion men's tennis team began its 2022 spring slate on Sunday afternoon with a 5-2 win over Penn State inside the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center.

"An impressive performance from our guys today," said ODU head coach Dominik Mueller.  "The guys played with energy from the start and it helped us get a good season opening win.  With Codie playing in his first dual match and getting the clinching point in doubles and was the first off in singles, Ollie battled back from a set down to win the fifth team point and Yevhen getting the match clincher, I like where we are heading."

In doubles, the Monarchs took the first two matches to clinch the team point.  Younes Lalami and Oliver Nolan scored a 6-1 win at No. 1, while the team point was clinched at No. 2 as Luca Maldoner and Codie van Schalkwyk took a 6-4 win.

During singles, the Monarchs got wins from Maldoner at No. 1 (6-3, 6-2), Nolan at No. 4  (3-6, 7-6, 1-0/10-5) and van Schalkwyk at No. 5 (6-3, 6-0).  Yevhen Sirous recorded the match clinching point with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Miko Eala at No. 3.

The Monarchs are back in action on Sunday, Jan. 23 when they host Auburn University in an 11 a.m. match at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center.
